Hepatic autophagy and mitophagy status in dairy cows with subclinical and clinical ketosis

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2021
Severe negative energy balance around parturition is an important contributor to ketosis, a metabolic disorder that occurs most frequently in the peripartal period. Autophagy and mitophagy are important processes responsible for breaking down useless or toxic cellular material, and in particular damaged mitochondria.

Field Study of Dairy Cows with Reduced Appetite in Early Lactation: Clinical Examinations, Blood and Rumen Fluid Analyses

open access: yesActa Veterinaria Scandinavica, 2001
The study included 125 cows with reduced appetite and with clinical signs interpreted by the owner as indicating bovine ketosis 6 to 75 days postpartum. Almost all of the cows were given concentrates 2 to 3 times daily.

Indole‐3‐Acetic Acid Protects Bovine Hepatocytes Against Palmitic Acid‐Induced Lipid Accumulation and ER Stress Through SIRT3

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Cows with ketosis during the perinatal period often experience damage to the liver, a core metabolic organ, thereby exacerbating the disease's inherent vicious cycle. This study indicates that serum 3‐IAA concentrations were reduced in ketotic cows and show a significant negative correlation with hepatic TG content.

Gut microbiota shifts and short‐chain fatty acids alterations in pediatric epilepsy patients on a Mediterranean ketogenic diet

open access: yesEpileptic Disorders, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective The olive oil–based Mediterranean ketogenic diet (MedKD) may support patients with drug‐resistant epilepsy (DRE) or neurometabolic disorders by integrating ketogenic therapy with the cardiometabolic and neuroprotective advantages of the Mediterranean diet.

Genome-wide association analysis for β-hydroxybutyrate concentration in Milk in Holstein dairy cattle

open access: yesBMC Genetics, 2019
Background Ketosis in dairy cattle has been shown to cause a high morbidity in the farm and substantial financial losses to dairy farmers. Ketosis symptoms, however, are difficult to identify, therefore, the amount of ketone bodies (mainly β ...

Sodium‐glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors and the risk of late onset epilepsy: A real‐world cohort study

open access: yesEpilepsia, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective Late onset epilepsy (LOE) is associated with substantial morbidity. Sodium‐glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) may exert neuroprotective effects. This study evaluated the association between SGLT2i and risk of LOE among older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Intermittent fasting with medium‐chain triglycerides in drug‐resistant epilepsy: A pilot crossover trial

open access: yesEpilepsia, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective Ketogenic dietary therapies can reduce seizure frequency in drug‐resistant epilepsy, but adherence to the classical ketogenic diet is often poor. Intermittent fasting supplemented with medium‐chain triglycerides (MCTs) may offer a more feasible and less restrictive alternative.
