Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

The Effect of Coordinating the Outpatient Treatment across Medical Specialities for Patients With Multimorbidity

open access: yesInternational Journal of Integrated Care
Introduction: Patients with multimorbidity attend multiple outpatient clinics. We assessed the effects on hospital use of scheduling several outpatient appointments to same-day visits in a multidisciplinary outpatient pathway (MOP).

Degenerative findings in lumbar spine MRI: an inter-rater reliability study involving three raters

open access: yesChiropractic & Manual Therapies, 2020
Background For diagnostic procedures to be clinically useful, they must be reliable. The interpretation of lumbar spine MRI scans is subject to variability and there is a lack of studies where reliability of multiple degenerative pathologies are rated ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Pharmacists as Interprofessional Collaborators and Leaders through Clinical Pathways

open access: yesPharmacy, 2018
Pharmacists possess pivotal competencies and expertise in developing clinical pathways (CPs). We present a tertiary care facility experience of pharmacists vis-a-vis interprofessional collaboration for designing and implementing CPs.

Brain health clinics – An evolving clinical pathway?

open access: yesThe Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease
Dementia clinics traditionally focus on diagnosis and post-diagnostic care. Awareness is increasing that attention to risk factors and their prevention also forms a key part of dementia management. To describe our Bristol Brain Health clinic including 1) Clinical pathway 2) Patient population 3) Patient experience 4) Evaluation in line with published ...

Impact of clinical pathways in surgery [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Background: One strategy to reduce the consumption of resources associated to specific procedures is to utilize clinical pathways, in which surgical care is standardized and preset by determination of perioperative in-hospital processes.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.
