Phenotypic variation among Phytophthora ramorum isolates from California and Oregon

open access: yes, 2006
To manage and control Phytophthora ramorum successfully, it is important to know the amount of phenotypic variation within a given pathogen population.

Biotic Stress Responses and Oxidative Defense Mechanisms of Pinus brutia against Pine Processionary Moth Infestations

open access: yesBioResources
Defense mechanisms were studied for Pinus brutia, a cornerstone Turkish forest tree, against pine processionary moth damage by Thaumetopoea pityocampa (Den. & Schiff.) and Thaumetopoea wilkinsoni Tams 1926 moth species.

Heterozygous loss‐of‐function alleles associate the conserved 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease EXOSC10 with hypersensitivity to the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
EXOSC10, an essential nuclear RNA exosome‐associated 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease, is inhibited by the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU), and EXOSC10 depletion increases 5‐FU sensitivity. The colon‐cancer variant EXOSC10S402T, located in a proteolysis motif, is stable and nuclear but nonfunctional in vivo.

Genetic characterization of isolates of Giardia duodenalis by enzyme electrophoresis: Implications for reproductive biology, population structure, taxonomy, and epidemiology

open access: yes, 1995
The nature and extent of genetic variation in Giardia was used to infer its mode of reproduction, population structure, taxonomy, and zoonotic potential. Ninety-seven isolates of Giardia duodenalis, from a defined area in Western Australia and throughout

Clonal variation within a mucosal isolate derived from a patient with Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis infection Variação clonal de um isolado derivado de um paciente com infecção mucosa pela Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis

open access: yesRevista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de São Paulo, 1991
Three isolates over 5 years from a patient with persistent relapsing mucosal leishmaniasis due to Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis and 7 clones from one of these isolates were studied by zymodemes and scrodemes analysis.

Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...

Clonal origin of Epstein-Barr virus-infected T/NK-cell subpopulations in chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection

open access: yes, 2010
Clonal expansion of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infected B-cells occasionally occurs in immunocompromized subjects. EBV-infected T/natural killer (NK)-cells proliferate in patients with chronic active EBV infection (CAEBV) that is a rare mononucleosis ...

A perspective on clonal phenotypic (antigenic) variation in protozoan parasites

open access: yesParasitology, 2002
Intra-clonal phenotypic (antigenic) variation is used by many pathogens to evade the consequences of immune-mediated killing by mammalian hosts. In this substantially theoretical article, I emphasise that antigenic variation (sensu stricto) involves no change in genotype; its importance as a mechanism for promoting pathogen transmission and its ...
