Alcohol‐induced altered glycans in human tracheal epithelial cells promote bacterial adhesion

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Alcohol induces altered glycans to promote bacteria adhesion. Heavy alcohol drinking is known to increase the risk of bacterial pneumonia. However, the link between alcohol levels and risk of infection remains underexplored. Recently, we found that alcohol induced α2‐6sialo mucin O‐glycans in human tracheobronchial epithelial cells, which mediated the ...

Clostridium thermopapyrolyticum sp. nov., a Cellulolytic Thermophile [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Systematic Bacteriology, 1991
A new thermophilic, cellulolytic species of the genus Clostridium was isolated from riverside mud. The guanine-plus-cytosine content of its DNA is 34 mol%. The isolate ferments a wide range of carbohydrates. Its major fermentation products are ethanol, butanol, acetate, butyrate, lactate, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen. Hydrogen sulfide is also produced.

Tissue Engineered Human Elastic Cartilage From Primary Auricular Chondrocytes for Ear Reconstruction

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Despite over three decades of research, no tissue‐engineered solution for auricular reconstruction in microtia patients has reached clinical translation. The key challenge lies in generating functional elastic cartilage ex vivo. Here, we integrate synergistic cell‐biomaterial strategies to engineer auricular grafts with mechanical and histological ...

Principles for Rigorous Design and Application of Synthetic Microbial Communities

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
SynComs are artificially designed to enable inter‐species metabolic interactions, metabolic division of labor, and ecological interactions that can elicit phenotypes like colonization stability and environmental adaptation. This systematic review explores the processes used to construct SynComs, the assessment of the mechanisms of metabolic interaction

Structural Basis of the Membrane Association by the Conserved RocS Membrane‐Targeting Sequence in Streptococcus

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Chromosome segregation in Streptococcus pneumoniae depends on RocS, a bitopic protein whose membrane‐anchoring mechanisms were unclear. Using NMR and AFM, this study reveals that the widely conserved RocS anchor binds to membranes via a conserved kink‐helix motif which inserts into lipid nanodomains.

Engineering of 2‐ketoacid Decarboxylases for Production of Isobutanol and Other Fusel Alcohols in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Isobutanol is a fusel alcohol that can be produced microbially for use as a biofuel or upgraded into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). A key enzyme in the isobutanol biosynthetic pathway is 2‐ketoacid decarboxylase (KDC), which irreversibly decarboxylates 2‐ketoisovalerate (KIV) to yield isobutyraldehyde.

MICROBIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL TESTING OF FOOD SNAILS MARKETEDS IN SARDINIA

open access: yesItalian Journal of Food Safety, 2013
A total of 29 samples of snails belonging to the species Helix aspersa, Helix aperta and Helix vermiculata were analysed for the presence of Salmonella spp. and Clostridium perfringens; Cadmium and Lead concentrations were determined by ICP-MS.

Integrated and closed‐loop biorefinery strategies for efficient waste valorization and biofuel production

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
Abstract Advancements in biofuel production technologies are essential for reducing global dependence on fossil fuels and addressing their overexploitation. Many valuable components of biomass, such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, remain underused in traditional biorefineries, which typically rely on a single feedstock to produce a primary ...
