Overview of cloud RAN

2014 XXXIth URSI General Assembly and Scientific Symposium (URSI GASS), 2014
Featuring centralized, collaborative, cloud and clean system, the cloud RAN (C-RAN) is deemed to be one of the most promising evolution trends towards future network. This paper provides an overview on the study progress of C-RAN, covering the major challenges, the potential solutions, the initial study results and the relevant activities in the ...

Cognitive algorithms for LTE cloud-RAN

2016 8th International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks (COMSNETS), 2016
In order to maximize the overall system throughput and cope with increasing user density and traffic distribution as also limited spectrum availability in dense urban scenario, next generation small cell networks need to be equipped with dynamic spectrum management schemes through centralized or distributed co-ordination approach.

Fully distributed scheduling in cloud-RAN systems

2016 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference, 2016
Cloud Radio Access Networks (C-RAN) promise to leverage cloud computing capabilities for enhancing the quality and coverage of next generation 5G networks. 5G networks shall witness an increasing density of users and access points, very small latencies, more bandwidth resources, and the use of virtualized hardware for baseband processing.

Locally Orthogonal Training Design in Cloud-RANs

2016 IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM), 2016
We consider training-based channel estimation for cloud radio access networks (CRANs), in which a large amount of remote radio heads (RRHs) and users are randomly scattered over a certain service area. In this model, assigning orthogonal training sequences to all users, if possible, will cause a substantial overhead to the overall network.

Cloud-RAN Modeling Based on Parallel Processing

IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, 2018
We consider in this paper the implementation of a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) on a centralized multi-core system supporting the base band processing of several distributed antennas. We present a parallel processing model based on both functional and data decomposition of virtualized base band unit (BBU) functions in order to reduce their runtime.

Deterministic Scheduling of Periodic Messages for Cloud RAN

2018 25th International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT), 2018
A recent trend in mobile networks is to centralize in distant data-centers the processing units which were attached to antennas until now. The main challenge is to guarantee that the latency of the periodic messages sent from the antennas to their processing units and back, fulfills protocol time constraints.

Evaluation Methodology for Fast Switching Cloud RAN Systems

IEEE Communications Letters, 2017
The switching scheme between base band units (BBUs) and remote radio heads (RRHs) is a key point in a cloud radio access network (C-RAN). Fast BBU-RRH switching schemes will play crucial roles in future flexible C-RAN systems. In this letter, an evaluation model is proposed to analyze the performance of fast switching schemes.
