A Baseline for the Predictability of U.S. Cloud‐to‐Ground Lightning [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2018
AbstractThe product of convective available potential energy and precipitation rate is used as a proxy for U.S. cloud‐to‐ground (CG) lightning. The proxy is computed from numerical weather prediction model outputs and thus provides a simple method for producing CG lightning threat forecasts.

Lightning Activity Observed by the FengYun-4A Lightning Mapping Imager

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2021
The Lightning Mapping Imager (LMI) onboard the geostationary meteorological satelliteFengYun-4A (FY-4A) detects both intra-cloud (IC) and cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning continuously during daytime and nighttime.

Dependence of Warm Season Cloud-to-Ground Lightning Polarity on Environmental Conditions over Sichuan, Southwest China

open access: yesAdvances in Meteorology, 2021
The effects of thermodynamic and moisture factors on cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning polarity in the warm season were discussed. Small convective available potential energy (CAPE) represents relatively shallow convection, which is beneficial to the ...

Halos generated by negative cloud‐to‐ground lightning [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2007
The Imager for Sprites and Upper Atmospheric Lightning (ISUAL) on the FORMOSAT‐2 spacecraft observes Transient Luminous Events (TLE) like sprites, elves, and halos from space. We analyzed halos that were observed in Central America close enough to ELF/VLF receivers that allowed for the determination of the polarity of the parent lightning.
