Spider Lightning Characterization: Integrating Optical, NLDN, and GLM Detection
Here, we investigate the characteristics of spider lightning analyzing individual lightning flashes as well as the overall electric storm system. From July to November 2022, optical camera systems captured the visually spectacular spider lightning in ...

Bipolar cloud‐to‐ground lightning flash observations [PDF]
AbstractBipolar lightning is usually defined as a lightning flash where the current waveform exhibits a polarity reversal. There are very few reported cases of cloud‐to‐ground (CG) bipolar flashes using only one channel in the literature. Reports on this type of bipolar flashes are not common due to the fact that in order to confirm that currents of ...

In this study, the synoptic conditions for modes of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) in South Korea are generalized based on composite analysis. The preferred precipitation region, synoptic patterns, moisture transport, sea surface temperature and thermodynamic and dynamic instabilities are characterized according to four modes: convective cells (CC)

Impact of fragmented urbanization on observed precipitation
This study investigates the impact of fragmented urban landscapes on downwind precipitation by applying an innovative observation‐centered approach to an extensive rain gauge network in Belgium. The approach classifies the observations based on the upwind urban land cover fraction, and compares precipitation indices between rural‐ and urban‐labeled ...

Fatal lightning strikes in Ireland from newspaper records 1900–2024
This study presents a chronology of fatal lightning strikes in Ireland (1900–2024) derived from digitised newspaper archives. Analysis provides insights into the seasonality, location, victim activity and synoptic conditions (from Lamb weather types) of 94 fatal events causing 113 deaths.

Estimates of lightning ground flash density in Australia and its relationship to thunder-days [PDF]
A method of deriving lightning ground flash density from CIGRE lightning flash counter registrations based on the detection efficiency of the instrument, independent of the latitudinal variation of cloud flash-to-ground flash ratio is presented.

core
Lightning is one of the most spectacular phenomena in nature. It is produced when there is a breakdown in the resistance in the electric field between the ground and an electrically charged cloud.
