Cloud-resolving model for weather modification in China [PDF]

open access: yesChinese Science Bulletin, 2012
Weather modification is widely carried out in China. It is important to develop an operational model for weather modification to predict the microphysical features of cloud and precipitation and to help locate possible seeding areas. A two-moment microphysics scheme is developed using a quasi-implicit calculation method.

Evaluation of Global Climate and Storm-Resolving Model Representations of Mixed-Phase Clouds and Their Hemispheric Contrasts

open access: yesAtmosphere
Mixed-phase clouds, in which liquid droplets and ice crystals coexist at temperatures between −38 °C and 0 °C, play a critical role in Earth’s radiation budget.

Towards climate simulations at cloud-resolving scales

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 2008
This study explores the potential added-value of applying cloud-resolving resolution to climate simulations. A month-long (July 2006) integration is performed with the CCLM on a convection-resolving grid of 2.2-km (0.02°) mesh size spanning the whole ...

On the reversibility of transitions between closed and open cellular convection [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2015
The two-way transition between closed and open cellular convection is addressed in an idealized cloud-resolving modeling framework. A series of cloud-resolving simulations shows that the transition between closed and open cellular states is asymmetrical ...

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.

A short review of numerical cloud-resolving models [PDF]

open access: yesTellus A: Dynamic Meteorology and Oceanography, 2017
A cloud-resolving model (CRM) allows performing numerical simulations of convective clouds, such as shallow cumulus and stratocumulus, or storms and squall-lines with a resolution on the order of a few tens of metres to a few kilometres over a limited-area 4D (time and space) domain.

Radiative, Hydrologic, and Circulation Responses to Warming in Cess‐Potter Simulations Using the Global 3.25‐km SCREAM

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems
Using the global 3.25‐km Simple Cloud Resolving E3SM Atmosphere Model (SCREAM 3 km), a pair of 13‐month Cess‐Potter simulations are performed to quantify the radiative feedbacks and the hydrologic and circulation responses to warming. Large‐scale aspects

MJO simulation in a cloud‐system‐resolving global ocean‐atmosphere coupled model

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2016
An observed Madden‐Julian Oscillation (MJO) propagating from the central Indian Ocean to the western Pacific from 15 December 2006 to 10 January 2007 was successfully simulated by a cloud‐system‐resolving global ocean‐atmosphere coupled model without ...

An Experimental High‐Throughput Approach for the Screening of Hard Magnet Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An entire workflow for the high‐throughput characterization and analysis of compositionally graded magnetic films is presented. Characterization protocols, data management tools and data analysis approaches are illustrated with test case Sm(Fe, V)12 based films.

A Dislocation Perspective on Strength and Toughness in Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Dislocations in ceramics enjoy a long but yet under‐appreciated history. The three research waves for dislocations in ceramics highlight the topic evolution over the last 90 years. This review focuses on the impact of dislocation on strength and toughness in ceramics.
