The influence of cloze probability and item constraint on cloze task response time
Journal of Memory and Language, 2015Abstract In research on the role of lexical predictability in language comprehension, predictability is generally defined as the probability that a word is provided as a sentence continuation in the cloze task (Taylor, 1953), in which subjects are asked to guess the next word of a sentence.

Effects of semantic constraint and cloze probability on Chinese classifier-noun agreement
Journal of Neurolinguistics, 2014This study aims to examine when and how readers make use of top-down information to predict or integrate upcoming words by utilizing the characteristics of Chinese classifier-noun agreement, as measured by event-related potentials (ERPs). Constraint strength of classifiers (strong and weak) and cloze probability of the pairing noun (high, low ...

Emotional valence, cloze probability, and entropy: Completion norms for 403 French sentences
Behavior Research MethodsSentence-final completion norms are a useful way to select materials in the study of psycholinguistics, neurosciences, and language processing. In recent decades, the literature has focused on measuring cloze probability and sentence constraint indexes to account for various contextual expectation effects. However, the emotional content of target words

Regional variation of cloze probabilities for sentence contexts
Behavior Research Methods, Instruments, & Computers, 2001In 1980, Bloom and Fischler published a paper describing a set of sentence contexts (SCs) and their cloze probabilities (CPs). This material has subsequently been employed in numerous studies of linguistic processing. We sought to define the completion words and their CPs for Bloom and Fischler's sentences in an inner-city British population in order ...

Cloze probability norms for a dual-sentence prediction paradigm
2023The aim of the present study was to extend this contribution by expanding the existing database of high-constraint, high cloze probability sentences to designs with two sentences, and is especially useful for experiments that examine featural similarity in greater depth. In total, 120 high-constraint sentences were validated and normed.
