Adaptive strategies for clutter edge detection in radar

open access: yesSignal Processing, 2021
Abstract In this paper, the problem of the detection and localization of clutter edges within training data is addressed. This is accomplished through a procedure capable of discriminating between either a unique homogeneous set or two heterogeneous subsets within a sliding window moving over the set of range bins of interest.

Edge clutter rejection for PPI radar images

Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 2013
Purpose – Incoherent primary radar is an applicable means for security surveillance of low-altitude airspace. An experimental airspace surveillance radar system has been developed for such applications. Target detector based on radar images is a powerful technique for the system.

Simultaneous mean and texture edge detection in SAR clutter

IET Radar, Sonar & Navigation, 1996
The authors consider simultaneous edge detection of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images in terms of both the local mean value and a texture parameter related to the depth of modulation. They assume that SAR clutter has K-distributed statistics which can be completely characterised by the mean and order parameter of the distribution.

An adaptive cell averaging-based CFAR detector for interfering targets and clutter-edge situations

Digital Signal Processing, 2014
Abstract In practice, there are two common situations when the independent and identically distributed (IID) assumption no longer holds: (i) there is a clutter edge and (ii) there is an outlier, e.g., a clutter spike, an impulsive interference, or another interfering target.

Estimation of transition range bin in clutter edge for space time adaptive processing

Proceedings of 2011 IEEE CIE International Conference on Radar, 2011
In this paper, clutter suppression and target detection in clutter edge is discussed. Firstly the statistical model of the clutter edge is established, based on which maximum likelihood estimation for the transition range bin of the clutter edge is derived.

Adaptive CFAR detection for clutter-edge heterogeneity using Bayesian inference

IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems, 2003
Radar constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection is addressed in this correspondence. Motivated by the frequently encountered problem of clutter-edge heterogeneity, we model the secondary data as a probability mixture and impose a hierarchical model for the inference problem. A two-stage CFAR detector structure is proposed. Empirical Bayesian inference
