Phylogenetic Profiling of the Diabetic Foot Ulcer Microbiome of an Afro‐Caribbean Population

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 3, June 2026.
Illumina amplicon sequencing revealed diverse bacterial and fungal communities in chronic diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) and adjacent normal skin from Afro‐Caribbean patients. Corynebacterium striatum dominated both sites. DFUs had higher relative abundance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the antifungal‐resistant Candida duobushaemulonii, with significantly

Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci in Low Birth Weight Infants: Environmental Factors Affecting Biofilm Production in Staphylococcus epidermidis

open access: yes, 2011
Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are the most common cause of biofilm-associated sepsis in very low birth weight infants (VLBW). Standard biofilm assays may not predict the pathogenic potential of CoNS since biofilm production is regulated by ...

Protective effect of snail secretion filtrate in an in vitro model of mastitis

open access: yesVeterinary Record Open, Volume 13, Issue 1, June 2026.
Abstract Background Bovine mastitis is inflammation of the mammary gland mainly caused by bacterial infections, with relevant economic costs and implications related to antibiotic resistance. In light of the increasing demand for sustainable therapies, this study evaluated the anti‐inflammatory and antioxidant effects of snail secretion filtrate (SSF ...

Walsh & Hoyt: Staphylococcus Epidermidis and Other Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci

open access: yes, 2005
Although S. aureus is the only species of human staphylococcus that is coagulase-positive, there are at least 18 different biotypes of staphylococci that are coagulase-negative and that can be differentiated from each other using various laboratory ...

Comparative Effects of Cigarette and Hookah Smoking on Oral Microbiota Composition and Blood Indices in Young Adult Males

open access: yesFASEB BioAdvances, Volume 8, Issue 6, June 2026.
This study examined 87 healthy young males to compare the effects of cigarette and hookah smoking on oral microbiota and hematological parameters. Cigarette smokers showed the highest oral bacterial load and greater colonization by Candida albicans and Gram‐positive cocci, while hookah smokers also exhibited elevated microbial levels.

Full‐Length 16S and 18S rRNA Long‐Read Sequencing Reveals Gut Microbiome Diversity in the European Brown Hare (Lepus europaeus)

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 18, Issue 3, June 2026.
Full‐length 16S and 18S rRNA Oxford Nanopore sequencing of large intestine contents from 30 healthy European brown hares revealed broad gut microbiome diversity. An 80% identity threshold detected substantially greater taxonomic richness than 95%, emphasizing the value of long‐read sequencing in wildlife microbiome research. ABSTRACT The European brown

Altered Pathogen Spectrum of Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis in Patients Treated With Proton Pump Inhibitors

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, Volume 63, Issue 11, Page 1487-1494, June 2026.
This multicenter, observational study reveals distinct alterations in the microbial spectrum of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) associated with proton pump inhibitor use. These results are especially relevant for guiding empiric antibiotic therapy of SBP.
