No Groundwater, No Fish: The Critical Role of Groundwater in Supporting Non‐Glacial, Salmon‐Bearing Rivers in South‐Central Alaska

open access: yesJAWRA Journal of the American Water Resources Association, Volume 62, Issue 2, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Groundwater discharge plays an important role in the hydrologic and ecologic functioning of rivers including sustaining streamflow and related habitat year‐round. Simultaneously, groundwater supports the increasing demands of people as the global population continues to grow.

Impact of Fire and Heat Stress on Soil Microorganisms: A Review of Community Changes, Molecular Responses and Plant‐Beneficial Roles

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 18, Issue 2, April 2026.
This work reviewed the direct and indirect effects of fires on microbial communities and the resilience strategies microbes use to withstand high temperatures . ABSTRACT Fire, whether occurring on the surface or underground, significantly influences soil microbial dynamics by reshaping community composition, functional diversity and overall soil and ...

Methane Emissions From Flame Curtain Pyrolysis (Kon‐Tiki)

open access: yesGCB Bioenergy, Volume 18, Issue 4, April 2026.
Flame curtain pyrolysis enables decentralized biochar production, but its net climate benefit depends on the magnitude of methane emissions caused during production. Methane emissions were below 5 g CH4 kg−1 biochar for dry feedstocks but increased for moist feedstocks. Pyrolysis emitted less methane than open burning of wheat straw. ABSTRACT Pyrogenic

Synergistic Effect of Co‐Pyrolysis of Biomass and Disposable Face Mask Waste on Energy Efficiency: Experimental Modeling for Energetic Characteristics

open access: yesGCB Bioenergy, Volume 18, Issue 4, April 2026.
The viability of co‐pyrolysis as a sustainable approach to simultaneously manage agricultural residues and COVID‐19‐related plastic waste, producing energy‐dense fuels and contributing to circular economy goals. The biomass and plastic blend exhibited favorable energetic characteristics with lower ΔG at higher temperatures.

Modeling of Physical–Chemical and Thermomechanical Properties of Glasses From Recycled Waste

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Glass Science, Volume 17, Issue 2, April 2026.
ABSTRACT This research focuses on understanding the high‐temperature phase evolution occurring during the vitrification of heterogeneous construction and demolition wastes (CDWs). The aim of this project is to transform this widely distributed and mostly unused waste stream into a homogeneous, engineered, glass‐based material with predictable ...
