Coalition effects on financial and service delivery performance in metropolitan municipalities in Gauteng

open access: yesJournal of Local Government Research and Innovation
Background: The South African electoral system does not favour a winner-takes-all situation. It is designed for a possible political coalition government on the basis of an electoral outcome below the 50+1 at the national, provincial and local government

South Asian Dams at a Tipping Point? The Case of Tipaimukh Dam in Manipur, India

open access: yesWater Alternatives, 2021
While dam building has declined in most developed economies, it has seen an increase in emerging economies, particularly in East and South Asia. Even there, however, such dams are facing mounting opposition.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

The Coalition and the Curriculum

open access: yesFORUM, 2010
It is a curriculum that is unnecessary for most pupils...a curriculum composed of a number of separate subjects, driven by pressures of examinations, which does nothing to prepare pupils to be citizens in a modern world .... Foreign languages might be omitted altogether because of a lack of time, mathematics is taught at too high a standard for most ...

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Introduction to coalitions in graphs

open access: yesAKCE International Journal of Graphs and Combinatorics, 2020
A coalition in a graph consists of two disjoint sets of vertices V1 and V2, neither of which is a dominating set but whose union is a dominating set. A coalition partition in a graph G of order is a vertex partition such that every set Vi of π either is ...
