Successful management of pneumonia and pyogranulomatous cranial mediastinitis due to Coccidioides species infection with fluconazole in a 3‐year‐old horse

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, Volume 36, Issue 11, Page e270-e275, November 2024.
Summary A 3‐year‐old Quarter Horse gelding originating from Texas presented for fever and inappetence. An encapsulated, mixed echogenic cranial mediastinal mass visible ultrasonographically in the left and right fourth intercostal space that displaced the heart caudally was identified.

Pulmonary coccidioidomycosis mimicking malignancy associated with Sweet's syndrome (acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis)

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 12, Issue 3, March 2024.
Key clinical message A suspicious malignant lung nodule with cutaneous reaction is not always cancer, especially in low risk for malignancy patients. A lung biopsy should be taken into consideration. The associated cause of Sweet's syndrome directs the treatment in each patient.

Coccidioides immitis Cervical Lymphadenitis Complicated by Esophageal Fistula

open access: yesCase Reports in Infectious Diseases, 2016
Coccidioidomycosis (valley fever) is caused by the dimorphic fungi Coccidioides immitis or Coccidioides posadasii. Most infections are asymptomatic or result in self-limited pneumonia; extrapulmonary dissemination via either hematogenous or lymphatic ...

Design and evaluation of an AFLP molecular marker for the detection of Coccidioides spp. in biological samples

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2019
At present, there is no standardized marker that is routinely used in clinical laboratories to diagnose coccidioidomycosis. Thus, the goals of this study were to obtain a sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) marker for the identification of ...

Miliary coccidioidomycosis mimicking tuberculosis: Case report and review of literature

open access: yesMedical Mycology Case Reports
Miliary coccidioidomycosis is a severe manifestation of diseases caused by Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii that is endemic to the southwestern United States as well as Central and South America.

Susceptibility of TLR4-defective C3H/HeJ mice to Coccidioides posadasii infection [PDF]

open access: yesMedical Mycology, 2009
Coccidioides posadasii is one of the two fungal pathogens that cause coccidioidomycosis. The inhalation of air-borne arthroconidia leads to the formation of endospore-forming spherules in the lungs and pulmonary infection. In severe condition, the endospores are disseminated to other non-pulmonary organs in the body.

Comparative genomics and transcriptomics in the mammalian fungal pathogen Coccidioides spp. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Coccidioides spp. are dimorphic fungal pathogens that cause the mammalian disease coccidioidomycosis, also known as San Joaquin Valley Fever - a potentially fatal infection that can occur in healthy human adults. C. immitis and C.

Effect of Farnesol on Growth, Ergosterol Biosynthesis, and Cell Permeability in Coccidioides posadasii [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Coccidioidomycosis is a systemic mycosis caused by the dimorphic fungi Coccidioides spp. The treatment for chronic and/or disseminated coccidioidomycosis can be prolonged and complicated. Therefore, the search for new drugs is necessary.

Coccidioides duplex real-time PCR assay sensitivity.

open access: yes, 2021
Genomic DNA from two control strains of Coccidioides species, C. immitis (249) and C. posadasii (C-735) were serially diluted and tested in triplicate in duplex real-time PCR assay.
