Coccinellid interactions mediated by vegetation heterogeneity

Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, 2015
AbstractEnvironmental heterogeneity can have profound effects on agroecosystem function and it is important for improving ecosystem services such as biological control. Promoting system diversity via non‐crop plants is one method for increasing habitat heterogeneity within farmscapes.

Coccinellid response to landscape composition and configuration

Agricultural and Forest Entomology, 2014
Abstract Arthropod natural enemies provide valuable pest suppression in agricultural landscapes. Natural enemy abundance and diversity within a given crop, in turn, have frequently been shown to be positively related to the amount of semi‐natural habitat in the ...

Habitat preferences of aphidophagous coccinellids [Coleoptera]

Entomophaga, 1985
From May to July 1982 and 1983, coccinellids were sampled in habitats that differed in aphid density, insolation, and host plant type. The number of adults ofCoccinella 7-punctata (CS),C. 5-punctata (CQ),Propylea 14-punctata (PQ),Adonia variegata (AV),Adalia bipunctata (AB),A. 10-punctata (AD), andCalvia 14-guttata (CA) were recorded.

ESTIMATION OF COCCINELLID NUMBERS AND MOVEMENT IN THE FIELD

The Canadian Entomologist, 1981
AbstractChanges in the numbers of adults of Coccinella californica Mannerheim and C. trifasciata Mulsant in small plots of alfalfa and oats were monitored over the summers of 1974 and 1975 by mark–recapture methods. Aphid population dynamics in the plots were studied concurrently.

Estimating Aphidophagous Coccinellid Populations in Alfalfa

Biological Control, 1997
Abstract Precise yet time-efficient sampling methods for coccinellids would be useful in integrated pest management (IPM) research and decision-making in alfalfa. We compared quadrat sampling, removal sampling, counting coccinellids for a constant amount of time while walking slowly through a field (timed counts), and sweepnet sampling for estimating

Predation by Coccinellid Beetles: Experiments on Switching

Ecology, 1973
The predatory behavior of a ladybird, Coccinella, was examined as it preyed upon varying ratios of two aphid species, Acrythosiphon pisum and Aphis fabae. Experiments were done in petri dishes and on bean plants. The ladybirds attacked the two prey species in direct proportion to their relative abundance. There was little variability among predators in

Extreme chromosomal polymorphism in a coccinellid beetle

Experientia, 1956

Another look at prey detection by coccinellids

Ecological Entomology, 1980
Abstract. Adult and fourth instar larvae of Coccinella septempunctata (L.) were tested to see whether or not they could detect prey prior to physical contact.
