DeepSpeech models show Human-like Performance and Processing of Cochlear Implant Inputs [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Cochlear implants(CIs) are arguably the most successful neural implant, having restored hearing to over one million people worldwide. While CI research has focused on modeling the cochlear activations in response to low-level acoustic features, we hypothesize that the success of these implants is due in large part to the role of the upstream network in

Convolutional Neural Network-based Speech Enhancement for Cochlear Implant Recipients [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Attempts to develop speech enhancement algorithms with improved speech intelligibility for cochlear implant (CI) users have met with limited success. To improve speech enhancement methods for CI users, we propose to perform speech enhancement in a cochlear filter-bank feature space, a feature-set specifically designed for CI users based on CI auditory ...

The Effect of Sleep Deprivation on the Vestibulo‐Ocular Reflex and Vestibular Adaptation in Healthcare Night‐Shift Workers

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
This study examined the effects of sleep deprivation on the vestibulo‐ocular reflex (VOR) in healthcare night‐shift workers. Results showed a significant reduction in VOR gain (7.5%) during passive head movements toward far targets after a night shift, whereas other VOR functions and gaze stability remained unaffected.

Quantifying Cochlear Implant Users' Ability for Speaker Identification using CI Auditory Stimuli [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Speaker recognition is a biometric modality that uses underlying speech information to determine the identity of the speaker. Speaker Identification (SID) under noisy conditions is one of the challenging topics in the field of speech processing, specifically when it comes to individuals with cochlear implants (CI).

A Novel 3D Printed Multi‐Material Simulator for Endoscopic Stapes Surgery: The “3D Stapes Trainer”

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
The 3D Stapes Trainer represents a promising platform for training in endoscopic stapes surgery. This simulator consists of a multi‐use temporal bone holder and a single‐use middle ear box, printed with material Jetting 3D printing technology. Eight participants in a university ear surgery course used the simulator to perform endoscopic stapes surgery.

Cochlear Implantation and Single-sided Deafness: A Systematic Review of the Literature

open access: yesInternational Archives of Otorhinolaryngology, 2016
Introduction Current data show that binaural hearing is superior to unilateral hearing, specifically in the understanding of speech in noisy environments. Furthermore, unilateral hearing reduce onés ability to localize sound.

A 0.042 mm^2 programmable biphasic stimulator for cochlear implants suitable for a large number of channels [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
This paper presents a compact programmable biphasic stimulator for cochlear implants. By employing double-loop negative feedback, the output impedance of the current generator is increased, while maximizing the voltage compliance of the output transistor.
