Facial nerve stimulation in cochlear implant users – a matter of stimulus parameters?
Cochlear Implants International, 2022Objectives To describe the influence of stimulus parameters on aberrant facial nerve stimulation in cochlear implant users. Methods Retrospective case series (three ears – two patients).

To simulate through electrical stimulation the auditory nerve excitation patterns produced by a normal ear, it is necessary to control both the spatial and the timing aspects of the neural firing pattern. While the spatiaJ localization, the “place” aspect of stimulation can probably be achieved adequately with either scala tympani or direct eighth ...

Cochlear nerve fiber responses: Distribution along the cochlear partition
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1975Fourier analysis of discharge patterns in response to sinusoidal acoustic stimulation provides a consistent and repeatable measure of response phase and amplitude. The distribution of the fundamental components of response for large populations of fibers as a function of their characteristic frequency provides a link between the spatiotemporal ...

The bony cochlear nerve canal in children with absent or hypoplastic cochlear nerves
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology, 2011To correlate presence and size of the bony cochlear nerve canal [BCNC] with size of the internal auditory meatus [IAM] on CT in children with absent or hypoplastic cochlear nerves [CNs] as compared to age matched controls. This retrospective case-notes review was based in the departments of Cochlear Implantation and Neuroradiology at a tertiary ...

Facial nerve injury in cochlear implantation
Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, 1993We present eight cases of FN dysfunction after cochlear implantation. Four mechanisms of injury are proposed. The most common injury occurs from the heat of a bur shaft rotating over the FN in the facial recess. Several suggestions are made to help prevent the type of injuries we have seen.

Facial Nerve Stimulation after Cochlear Implantation
The Laryngoscope, 2005This study was designed to compare the incidence and nature of facial nerve stimulation (FNS) in patients receiving cochlear implants (CI) manufactured by Cochlear Corporation, Advanced Bionics Corporation, and MedEl.Retrospective chart review at a tertiary referral center. The charts of 600 patients who received CIs from 1993 to 2003 with at least 1 ...

The Cochlear Nerve in Meniere's Disease
Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, 1980Cochlear nerves of 11 patients with advanced Meniere's disease were studied by light and electron microscopy. All the nerves appeared normal on light microscopy. In cross sections, the density of myelinated nerve fibers was approximately 20,000 fibers per square millimeter in most cases. In two cases, the density was reduced, about 14,000/sq mm.
