Characteristics of Multiple-Seeded Cocklebur: A Biotype of Common Cocklebur (Xanthium strumariumL.)

Weed Technology, 1999
A new biotype of common cocklebur, called multiple-seeded cocklebur (MSC), was found in Bell County, TX, in 1994. MSC has up to 25 seeds per bur, usually producing up to nine seedlings, whereas normal common cocklebur (NCC) has two seeds per bur which usually produce only one seedling.

Two C2H4-producing systems in cocklebur seeds

Planta, 1976
C2H4 production of the embryonic axes and cotyledons excised from dormant and non-dormant cocklebur (Xanthium pennsylvanicum Wallr.) seeds was examined in relation to ambient O2 tensions. There were two kinds of C2H4-producing systems, quasi-anaerobic and aerobic, in both organs.

In vitro culture ofXanthium strumarium (Cocklebur)

Plant Cell, Tissue and Organ Culture, 1994
Xanthium strumarium L. was micropropagated by rooting shoots proliferated from shoot-tip explants. The best shoot proliferation was obtained from explants growing on Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 4.4 to 8.9 μM benzyladenine (BA) and 1.1 to 2.1 μM naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA).

Common Cocklebur Competition in Soybeans

Weed Science, 1974
The competitive effects of common cocklebur (Xanthium pensylvanicumWallr.) on soybeans[Glycine max(L.) Merr. ‘Lee 68′] were studied on Dundee silty clay loam soil from 1970 to 1972. Full-season competition by common cocklebur at 3,300, 6,600, 13,000, and 26,000 plants/ha reduced the 2-year average soybean seed yields 10, 28, 43, and 52%, respectively ...

Common Cocklebur Competition in Forage Maize

Weed Technology, 2011
Common cocklebur is a new weed in irrigated maize grown for forage in the hot, dry region of northwest Pakistan. We conducted experiments in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Peshawar, Pakistan, during 2006 and 2007 to evaluate the interaction of common cocklebur density and maize density on biomass, leaf area index (LAI), and plant height of forage ...

Toxicological Pathology of Cockleburs (Xanthium spp.) for Broiler Chickens

Avian Diseases, 1992
Spiking mortality syndrome (SMS) in chickens resembles cocklebur toxicity in cattle, sheep, pigs, and rats. In order to determine if cockleburs are toxic to broiler chicks, crushed burs were fed (25% wt:wt) to broilers for 21 days. Ingestion of cockleburs resulted in significant failure to properly gain body weight.

Rhythmic Behavior in Germination of Cocklebur Seeds

Physiologia Plantarum, 1978
AbstractNon‐dormant, lower seeds of cocklebur (Xanthium pensylvanicum Wallr.) germinated with unimodal flush after 20 and 36 h from the start of water imbibition at 33 and 23°C, respectively. At 28°C, however, germination occurred bimodally, the time of each peak coinciding with that at 23 and 33°C. This type of germination behavior was induced even at

Nitrogen retranslocation in plants of maize, lupin and cocklebur

Plant and Soil, 1986
In a split root experiment translocation of N from shoot to root was studied using 15NO 3 − . The three plant species selected for this experiment differed significantly with respect to root NRA. For lupin, maize and cocklebur about 80, 50 and 6% of all absorbed NO 3 − was assimilated in the roots, respectively.

Photoperiodic responses in experimental hybrids of cockleburs

Nature, 1974
HYBRID intermediacy in night requirements for flowering has been reported in a study1 of latitudinal variation of photoperiodic adaptation in cockleburs (Xanthium strumarium L.). The report stated that the data showed that different strains produced F1 hybrids photoperiodically intermediate between the parents and that segregation for critical night ...
