1995The coconut palm, (Cocos nucifera L.), also given the name “tree of life” or the “tree of a hundred uses”, plays an important socioeconomic role. It is a heliophilous plant widely distributed throughout the humid intertropical zone, where it is grown on more than 10 million ha in 80 countries (Pannetier and Buffard-Morel 1986).

1990Despite the increasing production of soybean and palm oils over the last two decades, coconut oil remains an important product on the world market as it is one of only two commercial sources of short-chain fatty acids with 8–14 carbon atoms.
