Two-dimensional modulation codes
IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, 1992A new class of run-length-limited codes in introduced. These codes are called two-dimensional or multitrack modulation codes. Two-dimensional modulation codes provide substantial data storage density increases for multitrack recording systems by operating on multiple tracks in parallel. Procedures for computing the capacity of these new codes are given

Noncoherent-coded modulation constructed from conventional trellis-coded modulation
IEEE Communications Letters, 1998We propose a method to construct noncoherent-coded modulation (NCM) by modifying the conventional trellis-coded modulation (TCM) as proposed by Ungerboeck (1982). The error performance of the modified TCM using noncoherent decoding can approach that of the conventional TCM using coherent decoding for additive white Gaussian noise.

Combination of block-coded modulation and trellis-coded modulation
IEE Proceedings I Communications, Speech and Vision, 1991It is known that trellis-coded modulation (TCM) can give a significant coding gain without compromising bandwidth efficiency, by the concepts of signal set partition and trellis coding scheme. It is also known that block-coded modulation (BCM) can be used to approach closely the maximum energy saving that can be obtained by using the densest lattice ...

Following a review of the principles of pulsed transmission of information, the method of pulse code modulation (p.c.m.) is discussed. Two different experimental systems for performing this function are described.

The term pulse code modulation (PCM) refers to the use of a specific set of rules for transforming a waveform into a stream of digits, and vice versa. To clarify the concept, however, the first point to be made is that PCM is coding, but it is not necessarily the modulation of the carrier.

Summary: This letter presents a technique of combining multilevel coded modulation and product coding to form product modulation codes which achieve low bit error rates with reduced decoding complexity. Three multistage decoding algorithms are presented, and good codes for both the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh fading channels have ...

A radically new modulation technique for multichannel telephony has been developed which involves the conversion of speech waves into coded pulses. An 8-channel system employing pulse code modulation (PCM) and embodying these principles was produced. The method appears to have exceptional possibilities from the standpoint of freedom from interference ...

In this paper a new digital passband modulation hierarchy has been proposed. It has the advantage of combining line coding and digital passband modulation in one entity, hence reducing the number of stages of the transmitter and the receiver. The new LCM enhances the transmitted signal with some desirable features such as favorable power spectral ...

As it is discussed in Chapter 1, power and bandwidth are limited resources in modern communication systems, and the efficient exploitation of these resources invariably involves an increase in complexity. It has become apparent over the past few decades that when there are strict limits on the power and bandwidth resources, the complexity of ...
