Coeliac disease is a gluten-sensitive enteropathy characterized by villous atrophy, hyperplastic crypts and increased numbers of intraepithelial lymphocytes which are reversed by gluten withdrawal. Diverse autoimmune disorders are frequently associated with the disease, and patients also carry an increased risk of gastrointestinal malignancy.
