Cognate maximization versus cognate minimization
2022The paper presents a brief evaluation of the current state of affairs in the field of comparative Altaic linguistics, claiming that the relative lack of progress over the past 15 years is largely due to the conflicting opposing strategies of "cognate maximization" and "cognate minimization", respectively adopted by proponents ...

Interlanguage studies bulletin (Utrecht), 1992
In this article I examine cognates, lexical items from different languages which are identified by bilinguals as somehow being 'the same thing'. Cognates have at least 4 essential properties: 1) they are always structural units; 2) they are words; 3) words paired may be but need not be semantically identical; 4) there is always some kind of formal ...

Bilingualism: Language and Cognition, 2001
We investigated 563 German–English nouns for the purposes of identifying cognates, false cognates and non-cognates. Two techniques for identifying cognates were used and compared: (i) De Groot and Nas's (1991) similarity-rating technique and (ii) a translation-elicitation task similar to that of Kroll and Stewart (1994).

Bilingual lexical processing: Exploring the cognate/non-cognate distinction
European Journal of Cognitive Psychology, 1992Abstract Three experiments examine whether the differential sensitivity to priming found for cognate and non-cognate translations in the masked primed lexical decision task is also apparent in other tasks. Experiments 1 and 3 employed tasks which specifically require the use of lexical information (i.e.

Picture naming of cognate and non-cognate nouns in bilingual aphasia
Journal of Communication Disorders, 1999Previous research has found differences in the speed and accuracy of responses involving concrete cognate nouns and non-cognate nouns in a range of written and "on-line" tasks using neurologically unimpaired, bilingual adults. The present study investigated whether cognateness affects verbal confrontation naming performance in balanced French/English ...

Macrophage activation by T cells: cognate and non-cognate signals
Current Opinion in Immunology, 1993Both tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interferon-gamma are involved in the activation of macrophage cytocidal/cytostatic effector function. Recent studies provide evidence that, in non-septic inflammatory disease, T cells may activate macrophages primed by interferon-gamma either by providing tumor necrosis factor-alpha (in soluble or membrane-anchored ...
