The more similar the better? Factors in learning cognates, false cognates and non-cognate words

open access: yesInternational Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, 2017
In this study we explored factors that determine the knowledge of L2 words with orthographic neighbours in L1 (cognates and false cognates). We asked 150 Polish learners of English to translate 105 English non-cognate words, cognates, and false-cognates into Polish, and to assess the confidence of each translation.

UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

Cognitive cost of switching between standard and dialect varieties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Switching between languages in picture naming incurs a cost associated with inhibition of the non-target language (Meuter & Allport, 1999).This cost is symmetrical in balanced bilinguals and asymmetrical in unbalanced bilinguals with higher cost ...

Enhancing Low‐Temperature Performance of Sodium‐Ion Batteries via Anion‐Solvent Interactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
DOL is introduced into electrolytes as a co‐solvent, increasing slat solubility, ion conductivity, and the de‐solvent process, and forming an anion‐rich solvent shell due to its high interaction with anion. With the above virtues, the batteries using this electrolyte exhibit excellent cycling stability at low temperatures. Abstract Sodium‐ion batteries

Indo-European languages tree by Levenshtein distance

open access: yes, 2007
The evolution of languages closely resembles the evolution of haploid organisms. This similarity has been recently exploited \cite{GA,GJ} to construct language trees. The key point is the definition of a distance among all pairs of languages which is the

Integration of Low‐Voltage Nanoscale MoS2 Memristors on CMOS Microchips

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents the first monolithic integration of nanoscale MoS2‐based memristors into the back‐end‐of‐line of foundry‐fabricated CMOS microchips in a one‐transistor‐one‐resistor (1T1R) architecture. The MoS2‐based 1T1R cells exhibit forming‐free, nonvolatile resistive switching with ultra‐low operating voltages, low cycle‐to‐cycle variability ...

Fourierist legacies: from the ‘Right to the Minimum’ to ‘Basic Income’ [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
The origins of the idea of a “basic income” remain to be fully explored. An idea with currency mainly in Europe, a basic income is conventionally defined as an income unconditionally granted to all on an individual basis, irrespective of the level of any

An Engineered Living Material With Pro‐Angiogenic Activity Inducible by Near‐Infrared Light

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
NIR‐responsive engineered living materials (ELMs) for controlled angiogenesis: Near‐infrared (800 nm) light activates engineered probiotic bacteria within alginate‐based living materials to secrete a blood vessel‐regenerating protein. The released protein promotes pro‐angiogenic effects in endothelial networks and chick chorioallantoic membranes.
