Dual-pump coherent anti-Stokes-Raman scattering microscopy

We introduce dual-pump coherent anti-Stokes-Raman scattering (dual-CARS) microscopy. This new technique permits simultaneous imaging of two species characterized by different molecular vibrations, as well as the removal of nonresonant background. This is achieved by using three synchronized laser pulses probing two different vibrations.

We demonstrate circularly polarized coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CP-CARS) microscopy that significantly suppresses the nonresonant background for high-contrast vibrational imaging. Circularly polarized pump and Stokes fields with opposite handedness are used to excite CARS signal.

We have achieved rapid nonlinear vibrational imaging free of nonresonant background with heterodyne coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) interferometric microscopy. This technique completely separates the real and imaginary responses of nonlinear susceptibility chi(3) and yields a signal that is linear in the concentration of vibrational modes.
