TEAMx cold-air pool model intercomparison study

Cold-air pools pose a significant challenge for numerical weather prediction models, primarily because they are often characterized by very stable stratification. Traditional surface-layer parameterizations, which rely on Monin-Obukhov similarity theory, tend to be ineffective in these conditions.

Numerical Simulations of Sheltering in Valleys: The Formation of Nighttime Cold-Air Pools

Boundary-Layer Meteorology, 2008
Numerical simulations of flow over two-dimensional valleys are conducted in order to study the occurrence of pools of cold air that form at the bottom of valleys during stable nighttime conditions. The results show that during strong surface radiative cooling and light-wind events, the near-surface potential temperatures that occur at the bottom of ...

Hydraulic Analysis and Cold-Air Pool Interaction of the Raco Gap Wind

Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology
Abstract Raco is a local wind occurring in central Chile where the Maipo River Canyon exits into the Santiago valley. The intensification of the easterly down-canyon flow starts at any time during some cold season nights, accompanied by increases in temperature and drops in humidity.

Simulation of a cold-air pool in Utah's Salt Lake Valley

2016
The Persistent Cold-Air Pool Study (PCAPS), which took place in Utah's Salt Lake Valley during winter 2010-2011, provides a rich dataset of targeted observations at scales appropriate for better understanding the dynamical evolution of persistent cold-air pools.
