AbstractCold agglutinin disease is a rare and poorly understood disorder affecting 15% of patients with autoimmune hemolytic anemia. We reviewed the clinical and pathologic features, prognosis, and management in the literature and describe our institutional experience to improve strategies for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Cold Agglutinins and Cold-Agglutinin Disease
Annual Review of Medicine, 1977Since the original descriptions of cold-reactive antibodies at the tum of the century, this group of antibodies and the diseases associated with their appearance have become the focus of a great deal of interest (1-5). Early investigators recognized that a group of these patients had paroxysmal hemoglobinuria on exposure to cold, and a subgroup of ...

Development of the Coombs test has led to rapid progress in the recognition of various autoimmune hemolytic anemias. Cold agglutinin disease, a relatively rare disorder, occurs in idiopathic and secondary forms, the latter often in association with diseases that alter the immune status.

LYMPHOMATOUS NEUROPATHY IN COLD AGGLUTININ DISEASE
Neurology, 2008Cold agglutinin disease (CAD) is characterized by the production of cold agglutinins (CAs), usually IgMk autoantibodies, causing chronic hemolytic anemia and cold induced acrocyanosis (reported in 90% of cases). CAD has traditionally been classified into a primary type (pCAD) and a secondary type accompanied by malignant disease, most often lymphoma ...

Peripheral neuropathy in cold agglutinin disease
Muscle & Nerve, 1991AbstractCold agglutinin disease (CAD) characteristically presents as anemia and cold‐induced rash. We report a man with purpura, anemia, cold agglutinins, and a sensory‐autonomic polyneuropathy. Treatment with corticosteroids and plasma exchange resulted in resolution of the anemia and polyneuropathy.

Cold Agglutinin Disease and Cryoglobulinemia
Clinical Lymphoma, 2005Cold agglutinin disease is a form of direct, extravascular, antiglobulin-positive hemolysis. In vivo, immunoglobulin (Ig) M fixes complement molecules to the red cell membrane. Successive passages through the mononuclear phagocyte system result in loss of red cell membrane.
