Bonding mechanism in cold gas spraying

Acta Materialia, 2003
Cold gas spraying is a relatively new coating process by which coatings can be produced without significant heating of the sprayed powder. In contrast to the well-known thermal spray processes such as flame, arc, and plasma spraying, in cold spraying there is no melting of particles prior to impact on the substrate.

Influence of cold gas spray processing conditions on the properties of 316L stainless steel coatings

Surface Engineering, 2019
It is well known that particle velocity before deposition is one of the most important parameters for fabrication of the high-quality cold sprayed coatings. In this work, 316L stainless steel powders were deposited on the substrate with the same material.

Gas-Substrate Heat Exchange During Cold-Gas Dynamic Spraying

Journal of Thermal Spray Technology, 2012
Abstract In this study, the temperature distribution of the surfaces of several substrates under an impinging gas jet from a cold spray nozzle was determined. A low-pressure cold-gas dynamic spraying unit was used to generate a jet of hot compressed nitrogen that impinged upon flat substrates. Computer codes based on a finite differences

How Cold is Cold Spray? An Experimental Study of the Heat Transfer to the Substrate in Cold Gas Dynamic Spraying

International Thermal Spray Conference, 2008
Abstract Time-resolved thermographic measurements were performed by a high speed infrared camera on a substrate surface during cold gas dynamic spraying without powder particles. Experiments were carried out on three commercial cold spray systems (Centerline SST, CGT Kinetiks 3000 and Inovati KM-CDS 2.2) spanning a wide range of gas ...

Development of multimaterial coatings by cold spray and gas detonation spraying

Surface and Coatings Technology, 2010
Abstract The basic objective is the development of multifunctional multimaterial protective coatings using cold spraying (CS) and computer controlled detonation spraying (CCDS). As far as CS is concerned, the separate injection of each powder into different zones of the carrier gas stream is applied.

Mechanical, tribological and corrosion physiognomies of CNT-Al metal matrix composite (MMC) coatings deposited by cold gas dynamic spray (CGDS) process

Surface & Coatings Technology, 2020
A 1 wt% carbon nanotube‑aluminum (CNT-Al) metal matrix composite (MMC) powder was prepared using a polymer pyrolysis chemical vapor deposition (PP-CVD) coupled high energy ball milling (HEBM) method and the resultant MMC powder was spray deposited as a ...

Chemical Interaction and Bonding in Cold Gas Spraying

International Thermal Spray Conference, 2011
Abstract The effect of chemical interaction compared to mechanical influences on the bonding mechanism in cold-gas spraying is a matter of great interest. In this study, combinations of different metals (Al, Cu, steel) sprayed onto galvanized surfaces (Cr, Ni) will be used for a first approach to gain information about substrate-particle

Investigation of the process parameters and restitution coefficient of ductile materials during cold gas dynamic spray (CGDS) using finite element analysis

Additive Manufacturing, 2020
Cold gas dynamic spray is a cold spray technique for obtaining solid-state surface coating. Several materials such as metal, metal alloys, composite materials, and polymer have been deposited successfully through cold spray onto a substrate material.

A Review of the Cold Gas Dynamic Spraying Process

2021
In this modern era, use of coatings on engineering materials has become highly inevitable. One such emerging coating method is the cold gas dynamic spraying. It is a solid-state process where deposition on to the surface of the material is done at high pressure and velocity. Adhesion of the powder to the substrate is possible because of the high amount

Localisation of deformation in cold gas dynamic spraying

Surface Engineering, 2016
One of the main specific features of the cold spray process is localisation during particle impact deformation. The resultant adiabatic shear instability is the phenomenon that is known to play a major role in the particle/substrate and particle/particle bonding and coating structure formation during the cold spray process.
