The Interface Morphology of Thixo-Joined Cold Work Tool Steel

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2014
Cold-work tool steel is considered to be a nonweldable metal due to its high percentage content of carbon and alloying elements. The application of a new process of the semi-solid joining of two parts of AISI D2 cold-work tool steel is proposed using a partial remelting method.

Semi-Solid Joining of D2 Cold-Work Tool Steel

Solid State Phenomena, 2014
Cold-work tool steel is considered to be a non-weldable metal due to its high percentage content of carbon and alloying elements. To address this problem the application of a new process of semisolid joining using a direct partial remelting method was developedto achieve a spherical join structure between two parts of AISI D2 cold-work tool steel ...

Air-Hardening, Cold-Work Tool Steels

1998
Abstract The air-hardening cold-work tool steels, designated as group A steels in the AISI classification system, achieve their processing and performance characteristics with combinations of high carbon and moderately high alloy content.

Improvement of wear resistance of some cold working tool steels

Wear, 2017
Abstract There are two basic options for improvement of surfaces of heat treated tool steels for cold working: mechanical treatment such as burnishing, or else chemical modification such as nitriding. The latter is affected not only by the nature of the chemical agent but also by diffusivity of that agent through the steel.

Oil-Hardening Cold-Work Tool Steels

1998
Abstract The oil-hardening cold-work tool steels, designated as group O steels in the AISI classification system, derive their high hardness and wear resistance from high carbon and modest alloy contents. This chapter describes the microstructures and hardenability of oil-hardening tool steels and discusses the processes involved in the ...

Prediction of working stress of cold-work tool steel

2008
Working stress depends on fracture resistance and on deformation resistance. Fracture toughness represents fracture resistance, whereas yield strength and modulus of elasticity characterize deformation resistance. Fracture toughness and yield strength directly depend on steel microstructure, opposite modulus of elasticity, which is the most insensitive

Performance of various tool steels in metal sheet forming cold work tools

2007
Performance of the sheet metal cutting and forming tools producing baking tray parts was monitored. The baking trays are produced from the carbon steel sheet and from the Teflon coated steel sheet, where resistance of the steel substrate of the tool forming inserts against galling is very important, as well as resistance of the cutting inserts to ...

Surface Treatment and Cold Working as Tools to Improve Oxidation Behaviour of Chromium Steels

Materials Science Forum, 2001
This contribution deals with the systematic investigation of different surface finishes (electropolished, polished, ground, sandblasted) on the oxidation behaviour of chromium steels. The specimens were oxidized in a H 2 -2.5%H 2 O atmosphere at 872 K for 1 h to 100 h.

Friction surfacing of a cold work tool steel—Microstructure and sliding wear behavior

Wear, 2013
Abstract Friction surfacing is a solid-state joining process, during which process temperatures below melting, a high cooling rate, and a high degree of deformation lead to a very fine microstructure and exceptional mechanical properties of the coating material.

Surface enhancement of cold work tool steels by friction stir processing with a pinless tool

Applied Surface Science, 2014
Abstract The microstructure and mechanical properties of enhanced tool steel (AISI D2) surfaces produced using a friction stir welding (FSW) related procedure, called friction stir processing (FSP), are analysed in this work. The surface of the tool steel samples was processed using a WC–Co pinless tool and varying processing conditions ...
