The majority of coliform mastitis cases are relatively mild and self-limiting. Teat dipping and dry cow therapy will not prevent coliform problems, neither do they cause them. Bad housing and poor milking time hygiene lead to coliform mastitis. Efforts to control coliform mastitis must be directed at reducing exposure to the bacteria.

Many strains of E. coli, Klebsiella, and Enterobacter can cause udder infection in dairy cows. Although some cases are severe, and occasionally fatal, most cases are self-limiting and would be resolved without therapy. Chronic coliform infections also occur; these may be subclinical but typically elicit recurrent clinical episodes.

Coliform myositis was diagnosed in a young calf with signs of pain, swelling, and edema of the right hind limb. Diagnostic methods included bacteriologic culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The organism isolated was a gas-producing Escherichia coli.

TRIMETHOPRIM-RESISTANT COLIFORMS
The Lancet, 1972Abstract 18 of 725 (2.5%) of coliform bacilli isolated from infections in inpatients and outpatients during 41/2 months in 1971 were resistant to trimethoprim. 8 of the resistant organisms were Escherichia coli , and at least 5 of them came from patients who had been treated previously with co-trimoxazole (trimethoprim with sulpha-methoxazole).

Canadian Journal of Research, 1946Bacteriological examination of 1080 eggs from pullorum infected hens showed 78 (7.2%) to be contaminated with coliform organisms, which were classified into various types. No coliform organisms were isolated from 1000 eggs laid by hens free from pullorum disease.
