Automated method for the isolation of collecting ducts

American Journal of Physiology-Renal Physiology, 2006
The structural and functional heterogeneity of the collecting duct present a tremendous experimental challenge requiring manual microdissection, which is time-consuming, labor intensive, and not amenable to high throughput. To overcome these limitations, we developed a novel approach combining the use of transgenic mice expressing green fluorescent ...

Cortically located collecting duct carcinoma

Urology, 2005
Collecting duct carcinoma is a rare, highly aggressive, renal tumor arising from the distal collecting ducts. Various histologic patterns can be found in the same tumor but most demonstrate duct-like or papillary architecture surrounded by desmoplastic stroma.

Development of water transport in the collecting duct

American Journal of Physiology-Renal Physiology, 2004
The ability of the immature kidney to concentrate urine is lower than in adults. This can lead to severe water and electrolyte disorders, especially in premature babies. Resistance to AVP and lower tonicity of the medullary interstitium seem to be the major factors limiting urine concentration in newborns.

The medullary collecting duct urea transporters

Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension, 1999
The terminal inner medullary collecting duct facilitated urea transporter, UT-A1, belongs to a family of four urea transporters. The inner medullary collecting duct also expresses three active urea transporters. Reducing urine concentrating ability in vivo upregulates UT-A1 and alters active urea secretion in the terminal inner medullary collecting ...

Potassium Transport in the Mammalian Collecting Duct

Physiological Reviews, 2001
The mammalian collecting duct plays a dominant role in regulating K+excretion by the nephron. The collecting duct exhibits axial and intrasegmental cell heterogeneity and is composed of at least two cell types: collecting duct cells (principal cells) and intercalated cells. Under normal circumstances, the collecting duct cell in the cortical collecting
