Machine learning reveals cryptic dialects that explain mate choice in a songbird

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
The authors show that captive populations of zebra finches, which have been kept in isolation for up to 100 generations, have diverged in song dialect. When individuals singing different dialects are mixed, mating is assortative for song dialect.

The benefits of swimming together

open access: yeseLife, 2023
When a fish beats its tail, it produces vortices in the water that other fish could take advantage of to save energy while swimming.

Probabilistic models of individual and collective animal behavior [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Recent developments in automated tracking allow uninterrupted, high-resolution recording of animal trajectories, sometimes coupled with the identification of stereotyped changes of body pose or other behaviors of interest.

Dynamical modeling of collective behavior from pigeon flight data: flock cohesion and dispersion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Several models of flocking have been promoted based on simulations with qualitatively naturalistic behavior. In this paper we provide the first direct application of computational modeling methods to infer flocking behavior from experimental field data ...

Vortex phase matching as a strategy for schooling in robots and in fish

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Whether and how fish might benefit from swimming in schools is an ongoing intriguing debate. Li et al. conduct experiments with biomimetic robots and also with real fish to reveal a new behavioural strategy by which followers can exploit the vortices ...

HIV prevalence among transgender women in Northeast Brazil – Findings from two Respondent Driven Sampling studies

open access: yesBMC Public Health, 2022
Background The HIV epidemic still high among key-populations in Brazil, especially among transgender women (TGW). The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of HIV infection among TGW and to analyze factors associated with HIV seropositivity

Group size and composition influence collective movement in a highly social terrestrial bird

open access: yeseLife, 2020
A challenge of group-living is to maintain cohesion while navigating through heterogeneous landscapes. Larger groups benefit from information pooling, translating to greater ‘collective intelligence’, but face increased coordination challenges.

An automated approach for counting groups of flying animals applied to one of the world's largest bat colonies

open access: yesEcosphere, 2023
Estimating animal populations is essential for conservation. Censusing large congregations is especially important since these are priorities for protection, but efficiently counting hundreds of thousands of moving animals remains a challenge.

The performance of field sampling for parasite detection in a wild passerine

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2022
Parasites can impact the behavior of animals and alter the interplay with ecological factors in their environment. Studying the effects that parasites have on animals thus requires accurate estimates of infections in individuals.

Social modulation of individual preferences in cockroaches

open access: yesiScience, 2021
Summary: In social species, decision-making is both influenced by, and in turn influences, the social context. This reciprocal feedback introduces coupling across scales, from the neural basis of sensing, to individual and collective decision-making ...
