Robust Model Predictive Control for Collective Pitch in Wind Energy Conversion Systems
Abstract When wind speeds exceed the rated values, wind turbines operate in region 3. In region 3, collective pitch control (CPC) is the main tool to regulate the turbine’s speed and generated power. The main challenges that face a CPC design are the modeling uncertainties, constraints on the control actions, and immeasurable system states.

Abstract The present work describes the results obtained from a nonlinear PID control (NPID) approach for the pitch control with top tower active damping of a large wind turbine. The control algorithm is implemented by using a well-known approach based on hyperbolic secant functions.

This work presents the first results from a field test to proof the concept of LIDAR assisted collective pitch control using a scanning LIDAR device installed on the nacelle of a research turbine. The purpose of the campaign was to show that a reduction of rotor speed variation is feasible with a feedforward update without changing the feedback ...

This work proposes a robust tuning method for full-load pitch control by deriving new design formulae for collective Proportional Integral (PI) pitch controllers. The paper investigates the frequency domain characteristics of a full state linearized turbine model extracted from the aeroelastic simulation tool HawcStab2, and suggests a reduced order ...

LIDAR assisted collective pitch control
Nacelle based pulsed LIDAR (Light detection and ranging) systems provide preview information of wind disturbances at various distances in front of wind turbines. In previous work it has been shown that this information can be used to improve the speed regulation of wind turbines by a look-ahead update to the collective pitch control, which indicates ...

Load analysis of look-ahead collective pitch control using LIDAR
In a detailed analysis the benefit of LIDAR assisted collective pitch control is evaluated, by using a realistic LIDAR simulator and comparing it to an advanced feedback controller. With the proposed look-ahead controller best load reduction can be observed for high turbulence and high wind speed. Damage equivalent loads on tower and blades are reduced

ABSTRACTThis paper investigates the loads on offshore floating wind turbines and a new control method that can be used to reduce these loads. In this variable power collective pitch control method, the rated generator speed, which is the set point that the collective pitch control attempts to drive the actual generator speed towards, is no longer a ...
