Cooperative climate action under background risk

open access: yesScientific Reports
Addressing climate change requires collective action, yet individuals face a collective-risk social dilemma: we must invest in mitigation efforts at a personal cost, with no guarantee that others will contribute, while the benefits are shared globally ...

On the computation of upper approximations to ultimate ruin probabilities in case of DFR claimsize distributions

open access: yesStatistica, 2007
In the present note we consider the classical continuous time model of the collective theory of risk under the assumption that the claimsize distribution is DFR (decreasing failure rate) so that, according to well known queueing results, the ultimate ...

Keratin 19 as a prognostic marker and contributing factor of metastasis and chemoresistance in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Keratin 19 (KRT19) is overexpressed in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer with high levels of Kallikrein‐related peptidases (KLK) 4–7 and is associated with poor survival. In vivo analyses demonstrate that elevated KRT19 increases peritoneal tumour burden.

Deciphering transcriptional plasticity in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma reveals alterations in sensory neuron innervation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pancreatic sensory neurons innervating healthy and PDAC tissue were retrogradely labeled and profiled by single‐cell RNA sequencing. Tumor‐associated innervation showed a dominant neurofilament‐positive subtype, altered mitochondrial gene signatures, and reduced non‐peptidergic neurons.

Strategic risk dominance in collective systems design

open access: yesDesign Science, 2019
Engineered system architectures leveraging collaboration among multiple actors across organizational boundaries are envisioned to be more flexible, robust, or efficient than independent alternatives but also carry significant downside risks from new ...

Metformin promotes mitochondrial integrity through AMPK‐signaling in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Metformin mediates mitochondrial quality control in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) fibroblasts carrying mtDNA mutations. At therapeutic levels, metformin activates AMPK signaling to restore mitochondrial dynamics by promoting fusion and restraining fission, while preserving mitochondrial mass, enhancing autophagy/mitophagy and biogenesis ...

IMPLEMENTATION OF FUTURES LITERACY LABS AS A REALIZATION OF THE 17TH POINT OF SDG IN DISASTER RISK REDUCTION

open access: yesJournal of Social Political Sciences
This research is motivated by the urgency to find new way of looking at Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in the TUNA (Turbulent, Uncertain, Novel, Ambiguous) era after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Exon 7 splicing of ERα predicts poor prognosis and increases phenotypic heterogeneity in luminal a subtype breast cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ERα splice variant ERα∆7 lacks the C‐terminus, and its expression may change phenotypes of breast cancers. Our results showed that ERα∆7 is found in the luminal A subtype, and elevated ERα∆7 levels are linked to improved cell survival with lower proliferation and migration.

A new electoral bottom-up model of institutional governance

open access: yesScientific Reports
The sustainable governance of Global Risky Commons (GRC)—global commons in the presence of a sizable risk of overall failure—is ubiquitous and requires a global solution. A prominent example is the mitigation of the adverse effects of global warming.
