Manipulation of Colloids by Nonequilibrium Depletion Force in Temperature Gradient [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The non-equilibrium distribution of colloids in a polymer solution under a temperature gradient is studied experimentally. A slight increase of local temperature by a focused laser drives the colloids towards the hot region, resulting in the trapping of the colloids irrespective of their own thermophoretic properties.

Cross-interaction drives stratification in drying film of binary colloidal mixtures [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. Lett. 118, 108002 (2017), 2017
When a liquid film of colloidal solution consisting of particles of different sizes is dried on a substrate, the colloids often stratify, where smaller colloids are laid upon larger colloids. This phenomenon is counter intuitive because larger colloids which have smaller diffusion constant are expected to remain near the surface during the drying ...

Solvent mediated interactions between model colloids and interfaces: A microscopic approach [PDF]

open access: yesJ. Chem. Phys. 131, 124704 (2009), 2009
We determine the solvent mediated contribution to the effective potentials for model colloidal or nano- particles dispersed in a binary solvent that exhibits fluid-fluid phase separation. Using a simple density functional theory we calculate the density profiles of both solvent species in the presence of the `colloids', which are treated as external ...

Effects of colloid polydispersity on the phase behaviour of colloid-polymer mixtures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We study theoretically the equilibrium phase behaviour of a mixture of polydisperse hard-sphere colloids and monodisperse polymers, modelled using the Asakura-Oosawa model within the free volume approximation of Lekkerkerker et al. We compute full phase diagrams in the plane of colloid and polymer volume fractions, using the moment free energy method ...

Effect of fluid-colloid interactions on the mobility of a thermophoretic microswimmer in non-ideal fluids [PDF]

open access: yesSoft Matter 11, 6703-6715 (2015), 2015
Janus colloids propelled by light, e.g., thermophoretic particles, offer promising prospects as artificial microswimmers. However, their swimming behavior and its dependence on fluid properties and fluid-colloid interactions remain poorly understood.

The Role of Silica Nanoparticles in Promoting the Germination of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) Seeds

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2023
The addition of nanoparticles has been reported to be an effective strategy for enhancing seed germination, but the underlying mechanisms whereby this occurs are unclear.

Colloids and polymers in random colloidal matrices: demixing under good-solvent conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We consider a simplified coarse-grained model for colloid-polymer mixtures, in which polymers are represented as monoatomic molecules interacting by means of pair potentials. We use it to study polymer-colloid segregation in the presence of a quenched matrix of colloidal hard spheres.

Efficient simulations of charged colloidal dispersions: A density functional approach [PDF]

open access: yesMacromolecular Theory and Simulations 14, 278 (2005), 2004
A numerical method is presented for first-principle simulations of charged colloidal dispersions in electrolyte solutions. Utilizing a smoothed profile for colloid-solvent boundaries, efficient mesoscopic simulations are enabled for modeling dispersions of many colloidal particles exhibiting many-body electrostatic interactions.
