Direct observation of an exposed blood vessel in a colonic diverticulum using ultrathin endoscopy

open access: yesDEN Open
In recent years, cases of diverticular bleeding have become more common. Although identifying the bleeding diverticulum is difficult, it is even more difficult to identify the exposed blood vessels in the bleeding diverticulum.

Differential Impact of Metabolic Bariatric Surgery Versus Semaglutide on Adverse Hepatic and Extrahepatic Outcomes in Individuals With Metabolic Dysfunction‐Associated Steatotic Liver Disease and Type 2 Diabetes

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, Volume 28, Issue 7, Page 5684-5695, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim We compared the impact of metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) versus semaglutide on clinical outcomes in individuals with metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Methods Patients with MASLD and T2D who had MBS or semaglutide in 2018–2023 were identified (TriNetX database).

The junction between the midgut and hindgut co‐localizes with the rectosigmoid junction

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 249, Issue 1, Page 33-53, July 2026.
At 5 weeks of development, the midgut has formed its primary loop (left). It is well established that the midgut is bounded cranially by the caudal end of the ventral mesentery and the presence of the common bile duct, but its caudal boundary remains to be established.

Development of a virtual phantom for HDR cervical cancer brachytherapy: A multi‐institutional tool for training, quality assurance, and variability reduction

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, Volume 27, Issue 6, June 2026.
Background High‐dose‐rate brachytherapy (HDR‐BT) is a critical modality in the treatment of cervical cancer, requiring accurate and efficient treatment planning. Unlike external beam radiation therapy, HDR‐BT demands specialized skills and training.

From Leukemia to Solid Tumors, Successful Multidisciplinary Management of Three Distinct Primary Cancers in a Single Patient: A Case Report

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT A 41‐year‐old man developed three distinct primary malignancies—acute myeloid leukemia, male breast cancer, and metastatic colorectal cancer—within 7 years. This rare case highlights the evolving challenge of multiple primary cancers and demonstrates how coordinated multidisciplinary care can preserve curative intent despite successive life ...

Blood‐based cell‐free DNA and multitarget stool RNA screening tests to detect colorectal cancer: A systematic review

open access: yesCancer, Volume 132, Issue 11, 1 June 2026.
Abstract Two new tests, a cell‐free DNA (cfDNA) blood‐based test (BBT) and multitarget stool RNA (mt‐sRNA) test with in‐laboratory fecal immunochemical testing, were recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, and a second BBT is under review. These tests have the potential to overcome barriers to screening.

Divergent Resilience of Bacterial and Fungal Gut Microbiota After Colorectal Surgery: Insights From a Prospective Longitudinal Cohort Study

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 6, June 2026.
Patients undergoing colorectal surgery (n = 59) were sampled before and after surgery to investigate perioperative microbiome dynamics. Using 16S rRNA and ITS2 genes amplicon sequencing, bacterial diversity significantly decreased postoperatively, while fungal communities remained resilient.

An approach to the management of volvulus of the sigmoid colon

open access: yes, 1990
The colon involved with the sigmoid volvulus is much thicker than the normal colon. It is easy to handle and holds sutures well. Patients who have sigmoid-colon volvulus do not have much faecal loading. Most of the distension is gaseous.
