Genome-wide association studies of inflammatory bowel disease in German shepherd dogs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Canine Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is considered a multifactorial disease caused by complex interactions between the intestinal immune system, intestinal microbiota and environmental factors in genetically susceptible individuals.

RIPK4 function interferes with melanoma cell adhesion and metastasis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RIPK4 promotes melanoma growth and spread. RIPK4 levels increase as skin lesions progress to melanoma. CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated deletion of RIPK4 causes melanoma cells to form less compact spheroids, reduces their migratory and invasive abilities and limits tumour growth and dissemination in mouse models.

Flavanol monomer-induced changes to the human faecal microflora [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We have investigated the bacterial-dependent metabolism of ( − )-epicatechin and (+)-catechin using a pH-controlled, stirred, batch-culture fermentation system reflective of the distal region of the human large intestine.

COMP–PMEPA1 axis promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in breast cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study reveals that cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in breast cancer. We identify PMEPA1 (protein TMEPAI) as a novel COMP‐binding partner that mediates EMT via binding to the TSP domains of COMP, establishing the COMP–PMEPA1 axis as a key EMT driver in breast cancer.

The Effectiveness of Transabdominal Ultrasonography in Managing Chronic Constipation in the Elderly, with a Focus on the Underlying Pathological Conditions

open access: yesDiagnostics
Chronic constipation is more common in the elderly and associated with numerous diseases. For the diagnosis of chronic constipation in the elderly, it is essential to exclude constipation secondary to colorectal cancer or other causes.

A Wireless Implantable System for Facilitating Gastrointestinal Motility. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Gastrointestinal (GI) electrical stimulation has been shown in several studies to be a potential treatment option for GI motility disorders. Despite the promising preliminary research progress, however, its clinical applicability and usability are still ...

E2A selectively regulates TGF‐β–induced apoptosis in KRAS‐mutant non‐small cell lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Ability to induce apoptosis by TGF‐β is frequently lost in advanced lung adenocarcinoma despite intact TGF‐β signaling. We identify E2A as a mutant KRAS–dependent mediator of resistance to TGF‐β–induced apoptosis. TGF‐β induces E2A via SMAD3 in mutant KRAS cells, and E2A silencing restores apoptosis and enhances radiation response in cell lines ...

Cystathionine Gamma-Lyase Regulates TNF-α-Mediated Injury Response in Human Colonic Epithelial Cells and Colonoids

open access: yesAntioxidants
Cystathionine gamma-lyase (CSE) and TNF-α are now recognized as key regulators of intestinal homeostasis, inflammation, and wound healing. In colonic epithelial cells, both molecules have been shown to influence a variety of biological processes, but the

In vitro screening of probiotic lactic acid bacteria and prebiotic glucooligosaccharides to select effective synbiotics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Probiotics and prebiotics have been demonstrated to positively modulate the intestinal microflora and could promote host health. Although some studies have been performed on combinations of probiotics and prebiotics, constituting synbiotics, results on ...

Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...
