3D‐Printed and Recombinant Spider Silk Particle Reinforced Collagen Composite Scaffolds for Soft Tissue Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The newly developed, combined 3D‐extrusion bioprinting process of a collagen ink and a recombinant spider silk precipitation bath with a subsequent potassium phosphate post‐treatment fabricates spider silk particle‐reinforced, fibrillar collagen scaffolds with promising properties for soft tissue engineering.

The effects of melatonin on colonization of neonate spermatogonial mouse stem cells in a three-dimensional soft agar culture system

open access: yesStem cell research & therapeutics, 2017
Melatonin is a pleiotropic hormone with powerful antioxidant activity both in vivo and in vitro. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of melatonin on the proliferation efficiency of neonatal mouse spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) using a ...

Ternary Thermosensitive Hydrogel‐Encapsulated Macrolactam Heneicosapeptide Eliminates Epidermal Multidrug‐Resistant Bi‐Microbial Colonization

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The co‐existence of Gram‐negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Gram‐positive Staphylococcus aureus superbugs in open wounds exacerbates the difficulty of rational treatments. This study develops a hydrogel comprised of poloxamer, hyaluronic acid, and a de novo designed antimicrobial cyclic peptide.

Development of a workflow for the detection of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis from rectal swabs using the spectra VRE medium

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials, 2023
Background Spectra™ VRE agar (Remel, Lenexa, KS) is a chromogenic agar that is FDA approved for screening patients for VRE colonization. The package insert recommends confirming isolates with identification and susceptibility testing, but confirming ...

The recent expansion of an avian invasive species (the Cattle Egret Ardea ibis) in Algeria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This study identifies new information on the recent distribution of an invasive bird species, the Cattle Egret Ardea ibis, in Algeria. Breeding and wintering distributions as well as breeding numbers were obtained from large-scale surveys in 1999 and ...

Polyclonal Intestinal Colonization with Extended-Spectrum Cephalosporin-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae upon Traveling to India

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2016
We aimed to assess the intestinal colonization dynamics by multiple extended-spectrum cephalosporin-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (ESC-R-Ent) clones in Swiss travelers to India, a country with high prevalence of these multidrug-resistant pathogens ...

Ultra‐Effective Light‐Activated Antibacterial Activity via Carboxyl Functionalized Graphene Quantum Dots and Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Carboxyl‐functionalized graphene quantum dots (cGQDs) exhibit high singlet oxygen quantum yield due to strong spin–orbit coupling. cGQDs achieve minimum bactericidal concentration of only 0.4 µg mL−1 against S. aureus under low‐intensity illumination.

Fish carcass deposition to suppress invasive lake trout through hypoxia causes limited, non‐target effects on benthic invertebrates in Yellowstone Lake

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 2, Issue 6, Page 470-483, December 2022., 2022
In Yellowstone Lake, Wyoming, lake trout carcasses are used to suppress invasive lake trout embryos in an effort to conserve native Yellowstone cutthroat trout. Using a field experiment, we determined that carcass treatment had limited, non‐target effects on benthic invertebrates.

Leveraging Organ‐on‐Chip Models to Investigate Host–Microbiota Dynamics and Targeted Therapies for Inflammatory Bowel Disease

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The challenges of studying inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), highlighting limitations of traditional 2D cell cultures and animal models are discussed here. It introduces human intestine organ‐on‐chip (OoC) models as a promising alternative, capable of more accurately mimicking the intestinal microenvironment.
