A new method for colon examination, virtual colonoscopy, has been created by combining spiral computed tomography and virtual reality computer technology. If virtual colonoscopy proves equal to or superior to traditional colonoscopy in sensitivity and specificity for cancer screening, it would yield significant clinical and public health benefits ...

In a prospective study involving 833 consecutive outpatient and open-access colonoscopies, attempts were made to characterize the benefit of colonoscopy in terms of both predicted and unpredicted findings and therapeutic procedures. The endoscopist therefore predicted the endoscopic findings before the endoscopy.

Virtual colonoscopy (VC), also known as CT colonography, is a noninvasive imaging method for the examination of the colon. The technique is easy, less labour-intensive than barium enema and conventional colonoscopy and is inherently safer since no adverse event or procedure-related complications have ever been reported.

This article focuses on technique and clinical application of ileocolonoscopy and enteroscopy in children. The impact of endoscopic investigations and therapies on specific disease processes and comparison with alternative methods are discussed. Pediatric colonoscopy and enteroscopy differ significantly from their adult counterparts in nearly every ...

From 1987 to 1991, we performed intraoperative colonoscopy on 66 patients as a result of the following indications: the air leakage test (53%), detection of a previous malignant polypectomy site (20%), inability to complete preoperative colonoscopy (17%), detection of the source of intestinal bleeding (4%), and detection of impalpable colonic lesions ...

Current investigational models of murine colitis and colon cancer necessitate sacrifice of animals in order to obtain colonic tissue. The purpose of this study was to develop a safe method of murine colonoscopy that would allow serial evaluation and mucosal biopsies of the same animal.Nine mice (two C3H, two C57/BL6, and five IL-10 deficient) were ...

Quality metrics in colonoscopy are a growing area of focus given the development of and need for associated reporting and potential financial penalties. Three areas specifically have been identified as important by a multi-society task force, and the evidence behind each has been presented here.

Summary Endoscopic complications are rare but inevitable, occurring in fewer than 0.35% of procedures [B]. Knowledge of potential complications and their expected frequency can lead to an improved informed consent process [C]. Complications from the procedure include perforation, hemorrhage, postpolypectomy coagulation syndrome, infection, preparation-

AbstractDifferent diagnostic techniques for massive active lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage are reviewed. According to data in the literature and personal experience in 409 emergency endoscopic examinations of the large bowel, emergency colonoscopy is a valuable diagnostic tool in cases of massive colorectal bleeding.
