Bacterial colony counting by Convolutional Neural Networks

2015 37th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC), 2015
Counting bacterial colonies on microbiological culture plates is a time-consuming, error-prone, nevertheless fundamental task in microbiology. Computer vision based approaches can increase the efficiency and the reliability of the process, but accurate counting is challenging, due to the high degree of variability of agglomerated colonies.

Automated counting of bacterial colonies by image analysis

Journal of Microbiological Methods, 2015
Research on microorganisms often involves culturing as a means to determine the survival and proliferation of bacteria. The number of colonies in a culture is counted to calculate the concentration of bacteria in the original broth; however, manual counting can be time-consuming and imprecise.

Pitfalls of colony count of urine cultures.

JAMA, 1968
To the Editor:— In the collection of a urine specimen for culture, great emphasis is placed on plating out the specimen immediately, lest there be gross error in the colony count from bacterial multiplication while the urine sits on the shelf. Yet the physician rarely questions either the length of time the urine remains in the bladder (ie, the time ...

Method for Counting Microorganisms and Colonies in Microscopic Images

2012 12th International Conference on Computational Science and Its Applications, 2012
This paper presents a method to count microorganisms and colonies in microscopic images. The method uses a series of morphological operations to create a representation in which the objects of interest are easily isolated and counted. The proposal is successful in most cases, properly dealing with some difficult situations like when the sizes of the ...

The statistical distribution of colony counts in the spleen colony assay.

Experimental hematology, 1978
The statistical distribution of colony counts in the spleen colony assay was determined in C57BL/6 and C3H mice under varying conditions of the assay procedure. Assay mice were given syngeneic bone marrow cells from normal or irradiated donors. The mice were injected intravenously with marrow cells either immediately or 3 days after irradiation.
