An Automated Bacterial Colony Counting System

2008 IEEE International Conference on Sensor Networks, Ubiquitous, and Trustworthy Computing (sutc 2008), 2008
Bacterial colony enumeration is an essential tool for many widely used biomedical assays. However, bacterial colony enumerating is a low throughput, time consuming and labor intensive process since there might exist hundreds or thousands of colonies on a Petri dish, and the counting process is often manually performed by well-trained technicians.

Bacterial colony counting using the M.R.C. image analyser

Physics in Medicine & Biology, 1974
The optical considerations in illuminating bacterial colonies grown on agar plates are described. An arrangement which gives a high contrast image with almost total background suppression and good separation of touching and overlapping colonies is shown. Counting methods using television techniques are briefly described. Pathological considerations and

Semi-automatic prototype system for bacterial colony counting

2016 International Conference on Smart Systems and Technologies (SST), 2016
Bacterial colony forming unit (CFU) counting is a tedious task mostly done by humans. Procedure is error prone, time-consuming and laborious. In this paper we present a semi-automatic prototype system for CFU counting. The developed prototype consist of a hardware (area scan camera with LED light source) and C#-based desktop application.

Automated counting of bacterial colonies by image analysis

Journal of Microbiological Methods, 2015
Research on microorganisms often involves culturing as a means to determine the survival and proliferation of bacteria. The number of colonies in a culture is counted to calculate the concentration of bacteria in the original broth; however, manual counting can be time-consuming and imprecise.

Tetrazolium staining by optical scanning overestimates colony size and number of colonies counted

The International Journal of Cell Cloning, 1987
We measured the effect that staining with 2-(P-iodophenyl)-3-(p-nitrophenyl)-5-phenyl tetrazolium chloride (INT) had on the number and size distribution of tumor colonies counted using an optical image analyzer (FAS II). Staining increased the number of tumor colonies counted. By using opaque tumor cells or pigmented melanoma cells and measuring colony
