Evolutionary history and diversity in the ball roller beetle Canthon cyanellus

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2023
To understand the evolutionary history of species, it is necessary to know the mechanisms for reproductive isolation, divergence-time between populations, and the relative action of the evolutionary forces (e.g., mutation, genetic drift, gene flow ...

Sympatric ecological divergence associated with a color polymorphism. [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Biol, 2015
Color polymorphisms are a conspicuous feature of many species and a way to address broad ecological and evolutionary questions. Three potential major evolutionary fates of color polymorphisms are conceivable over time: maintenance, loss, or speciation.

Does color matter? Molecular and ecological divergence in four sympatric color morphs of a coral reef fish

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2020
Non‐sex‐linked color polymorphism is common in animals and can be maintained in populations via balancing selection or, when under diversifying selection, can promote divergence.

Color-assortative mating in a color-polymorphic lacertid lizard [PDF]

open access: yesBehavioral Ecology, 2012
Color polymorphisms are common in lizards, which provide an excellent model system to study their evolution and adaptive function. The lacertid genus Podarcis is particularly interesting because it comprises several polymorphic species. Previous studies with lacertid lizards have tried to explain the maintenance of color polymorphisms by correlational ...

Nuclear Gene Indicates Coat-Color Polymorphism in Mammoths [PDF]

open access: yesScience, 2006
By amplifying the melanocortin type 1 receptor from the woolly mammoth, we can report the complete nucleotide sequence of a nuclear-encoded gene from an extinct species. We found two alleles and show that one allele produces a functional protein whereas the other one encodes a protein with strongly reduced activity.

The Biology of Polymorphic Melanic Side-Spotting Patterns in Poeciliid Fishes

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2021
Melanin-based color patterns are an emerging model for studying molecular and evolutionary mechanisms driving phenotypic correlations. Extensive literature exists on color patterns and their correlated traits in the family Poeciliidae, indicating that ...

On Venezuelan pholcid spiders (Araneae, Pholcidae)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Taxonomy, 2020
We present a comprehensive revision of the pholcid spider collection of M.A. González-Sponga, who between 1998 and 2011 described 22 new genera and 51 new species of Pholcidae from Venezuela.

Green‐brown polymorphism in alpine grasshoppers affects body temperature

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2020
Ectothermic animals depend on external heat sources for pursuing their daily activities. However, reaching sufficiently high temperature can be limiting at high altitudes, where nights are cold and seasons short.

Color Differences Highlight Concomitant Polymorphism of Chalcones [PDF]

open access: yesCrystal Growth & Design, 2020
The meta- and para-nitro isomers of (E)-3′-dimethylamino-nitrochalcone (Gm8m and Gm8p) are shown to exhibit concomitant color polymorphism, with Gm8m appearing as yellow (P21/c) or orange (P1) cry...

Dispatches from the neighborhood watch: Using citizen science and field survey data to document color morph frequency in space and time

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2020
Heritable color polymorphisms have a long history of study in evolutionary biology, though they are less frequently examined today than in the past.
