Colour vision in billfish

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series B: Biological Sciences, 2000
Members of the billfish family are highly visual predatory teleosts inhabiting the open ocean. Little is known about their visual abilities in detail, but past studies have indicated that these fishes were likely to be monochromats. This study, however, presents evidence of two anatomically distinct cone types in billfish.

Posterior Disconnection Syndrome in Early‐Stage Adult‐Onset Cerebral Adrenoleukodystrophy

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Adult‐onset cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy is potentially treatable but often difficult to recognize before advanced cerebral involvement. Herein, we describe three men with early‐stage disease who initially presented with subtle visual complaints rather than subcortical dementia. Targeted neuropsychological testing revealed higher‐order visual

Colour normalisation to reduce inter-patient and intra-patient variability in microaneurysm detection in colour retinal images [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Images of the human retina vary considerably in their appearance depending on the skin pigmentation (amount of melanin) of the subject. Some form of normalisation of colour in retinal images is required for automated analysis of images if good ...

Cracking the Code: Which Ocular Symptoms Predict Dry Eye Signs? Insights From a Large International Sicca Registry

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective The study aimed to identify symptom‐based predictors of dry eye disease (DED) signs in the Sjögren's International Collaborative Clinical Alliance (SICCA) cohort. Methods We performed a retrospective analysis examining 16 ocular symptoms (most graded 0–4) and artificial tear (AT) use (graded 0–3) as predictors of DED signs (abnormal ocular ...

The perceived beauty of art is not strongly calibrated to the statistical regularities of real-world scenes

open access: yesScientific Reports
Aesthetic judgements are partly predicted by image statistics, although the extent to which they are calibrated to the statistics of real-world scenes and the ‘visual diet’ of daily life is unclear.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare autoimmune disease defined by immune dysregulation, vasculopathy, and progressive fibrosis of the skin and internal organs. Despite advances in care, major complications such as interstitial lung disease (ILD) and myocardial involvement remain the leading causes of morbidity and mortality.

Unconventional colour vision [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2014
Butterflies and stomatopods are certainly outliers in their unconventional colour sense and despite some similarities at first glance, in fact sample the world of colour very differently. In one way, butterflies are relatively conventional, possessing either tri-or tetrachromatic colour vision, then just adding one or several task-specific sub ...

Using panel tests in screening for congenital colour vision defects

open access: yes, 1993
The sensitivity and specificity of the Farnsworth Panel D-15, Lanthony’s desaturated D-15 and Farnsworth-Munsell (FM) 100-hue panel tests were compared in up to 201 congenital colour defective (37 ± 15 years) and 230 colour normal (36 ± 14 years) males.
