Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Understanding star formation in molecular clouds I. Effects of line-of-sight contamination on the column density structure

open access: yes, 2015
Column-density maps of molecular clouds are one of the most important observables in the context of molecular cloud- and star-formation (SF) studies. With the Herschel satellite it is now possible to determine the column density from dust emission.

Computational Geometry Column 41 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
The recent result that n congruent balls in R^d have at most 4 distinct geometric permutations is described.Comment: To appear in SIGACT News and in Internat. J. Comput.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Using Multibeam Echosounders for Hydrographic Surveying in the Water Column: Estimating Wreck Least Depths [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Wreck superstructure can extend into the water column and pose a danger to navigation if the least depth is not accurately portrayed to mariners. NOAA has several methods available to acquire a wreck least depth: lead line, wire drag, diver investigation,

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

The application of generalising judgements and their influence on the images of selected Polish columnists (a constructivism-focussed quantitative and qualitative approach)

open access: yesActa Universitatis Lodziensis. Folia Litteraria Polonica, 2017
The goal of the text was to indicate the image characteristics of an author of a verbal expression which were communicated through expressing generalising judgements, and to establish the difference between such generalisations depending on the given ...

Second-order effects in horizontally loaded reinforced concrete columns

open access: yesStudia Geotechnica et Mechanica, 2023
This paper deals with the second-order effects in horizontally loaded reinforced concrete columns. The current standard approach according to Eurocode 2 is the starting point for the considerations. Simplified methods that take into account the secondary

Deployable lattice column [PDF]

open access: yes, 1968
Lattice column, made up of many individually collapsible sections connected in tandem, rapidly raises measuring instruments to a level appreciably above that where data is to be recorded and evaluated.

The Statistics of Density Peaks and the Column Density Distribution of the Lyman-Alpha Forest [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
We develop a method to calculate the column density distribution of the Lyman-alpha forest for column densities in the range $10^{12.5} - 10^{14.5} cm^{-2}$.
