Frictional loss in multiplate bubble columns
The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 1988AbstractGas holdup and pressure loss were measured for various gas‐liquid systems in a batch, multistage bubble column. Experimental results show that the use of screen plates (α = 0.64) considerably increases the gas holdup but introduces a significant pressure loss for the two‐phase mixture.

Mineral precipitation and porosity losses in granular iron columns
Journal of Hazardous Materials, 1999As permeable reactive barriers containing zero-valent iron are becoming more widely used to remediate contaminated groundwaters, there remains much uncertainty in predicting their long-term performance. This study focuses on two factors affecting performance and lifetime of the granular iron media: plugging at the treatment zone entrance and ...

Advance warning for loss of separation in an industrial distillation column
Quality and Reliability Engineering International, 2017AbstractThis paper describes the development of a data‐driven advance warning system for the onset of loss of separation in an industrial distillation column. The system would enable preventive actions to avoid several hours of bad operation and subsequent recovery of the process. Data of more than 2 years of process operation were used to identify and

Investigation of precast RC beam-column assemblies under column-loss scenario
Construction and Building Materials, 2017Abstract The progressive collapse of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings, being one of the most critical failure scenarios, is a great concern for the structural engineering community. As precast concrete buildings are deficient in structural continuity, these are more vulnerable to progressive collapse than cast-in-situ RC buildings. The goal of this

Behaviour of MCFST column-steel beam connection with side plates in the scenario of column loss
Journal of Constructional Steel Research, 2020Abstract Four multi-partition concrete-filled steel tubular (MCFST) joints with double side-plate (DSP) were tested in the simulated scenario of progressive collapse. The main parameter in the test is the joint connection type. Two kinds of joints with discrete and consecutive DSP are studied.

Failure of Slender Concrete Columns of Loss of Stability
Key Engineering Materials, 2016Experimental verification of global reliability of slender reinforced concrete columns from the regular concrete C45/55 and high performance concrete C70/85 was realized within the applied research of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (SUT).

Interface Conditions and Loss of Stability for Stepped Columns
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2007We discuss the dynamic behavior of stepped columns subjected to follower forces. In particular, limit cases which correspond to columns with hinges or cracks and concentrated lateral supports are studied for the stability limit. Typically, solutions suffer jumps in certain derivatives, which have to satisfy compatibility conditions.

ABSTRACT Three different types of joints with long bolts were designed and tested in the scenario of column loss. The performance of different joints including flush endplate, extended endplate and stiffened angle under column removal was studied in detail.

Energy Losses from a Heated Air Column
1982Abstract : Estimates are made of the energy losses from the hot channel produced by (laser-guided) electric discharges in the atmosphere. The loss processes considered are heat conduction, continuum radiation, and line radiation. For the conditions calculated to exist in such channels (Te approx. 20,000 K, sigma (i) N (i) equal 2x10 to the 18th power c

Residual Strength of Tubular Columns With Localized Thickness Loss
Volume 3: Materials Technology, 2021Abstract This paper provides a comprehensive finite element analysis to investigate the ultimate capacity of corroded members under concentric axial loads. The paper investigates previous experimental work on stocky and slender tubular columns with simulated patch corrosion and provides a numerical model that can estimate the columns ...
