Elastic Response of Columns after Sudden Loss of Bracing

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 1996
A pinned column with an initial deflection and an internal brace is considered. The brace is modeled as a translational spring. Axial compressive loads are applied at the brace and at the top of the column, and the equilibrium shape is determined.

End Loss from a High-Beta Plasma Column

Physical Review Letters, 1980
The previous theoretically predicted diverging confinement time of a high-..beta.. linear sharp plasma column as ..beta.. ..-->.. 1 is removed by including the magnetic tension effect near the column throats. This result explains our own simulation as well as those of Brackbill, Menzel, and Barnes, and is in good agreement with experimental values. The

Loss of ocular dominance columns with maturity in the monkey, Callithrix jacchus

Brain Research, 1989
Previous studies have shown that adult marmosets lack ocular dominance columns (ODC) in area 17, but that ODCs can be demonstrated upon visual deprivation. The present results, obtained by transneuronal transport of WGA-HRP, indicate that ODCs normally develop in juvenile marmosets but disappear before the animal reaches maturity.

Sensitivity analysis of steel buildings subjected to column loss

Engineering Structures, 2011
In this study, the sensitivity of design parameters of steel buildings subjected to progressive collapse is studied. To this end, design parameters such as yield strengths of beams, columns, and braces, live load, elastic modulus, and damping ratio were considered as random variables.

Atomic Column Resolved Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy

physica status solidi (a), 1998
Spatially resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) is rapidly developing into a unique and powerful tool to characterize internal interfaces. Because atomic column resolved Z-contrast imaging can be performed simultaneously with EELS in the scanning transmission electron microscope, this combination allows the atomic structure to be correlated

Entropy production and exergy loss in experimental distillation columns

Chemical Engineering Science, 2003
Diabatic distillation, i.e. with heat exchangers on all trays, can increase the second law energy efficiency drastically compared to adiabatic distillation. The purpose of this research was to describe the entropy production rate in one adiabatic and one diabatic experimental water/ethanol rectifying column by applying the theory of irreversible ...

Analysis of reinforced concrete frames subjected to column loss

Magazine of Concrete Research, 2012
The objective of this study is to investigate the progressive collapse potential of reinforced concrete moment frames subjected to sudden loss of a first-storey column. To this end three-, six- and 15-story reinforced concrete moment frames were designed as model structures for analysis with and without considering seismic load, and their progressive ...

Hard loss of stability of Ziegler’s column with nonlinear damping

Meccanica, 2016
The paper is devoted to discuss the effects of nonlinear damping on the post-critical behavior of the Ziegler’s column. The classical Ziegler’s double-pendulum is considered in regime of finite displacements, in which, moreover, nonlinear damping of Van der Pol-type is introduced at the hinges.

Experimental Analysis of Slender Concrete Columns at the Loss of Stability

Solid State Phenomena, 2016
The use of non-linear methods for design of slender concrete columns by European standards. For the verification of non-linear design methods it is important to compare their results with results of experiments. Within the applied research of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava in cooperation with the ...
