Infrared emission from P/Halley’s dust coma during March 1986

1988
2 to 20 micrometers photometry of the inner dust coma of comet Halley was obtained at the NASA IRTF on Mar 6.85, 12.8, 13.75, 17.7, and 24.8. Positions offset 10" were measured as well as the central brightness. The strength of the 10 micrometers emission feature was observed to vary with location in the coma.

Dust Measurements in the Coma of Comet 81P/Wild 2 by the Dust Flux Monitor Instrument

Science, 2004
We present measurements of the dust particle flux and mass distribution from the Stardust Dust Flux Monitor Instrument (DFMI) throughout the flyby of comet 81P/Wild 2. In the particle mass regime from 10 –14 to 10 –7 kilograms, the spacecraft encountered regions of intense swarms of particles,

Confirmation of dust clusters in the coma of Comet Halley

Advances in Space Research, 1989
Measurements from the Ducma dust counter and mass analyzer on the Vega spacecraft are compared with those from the SP-1 sensor on the same spacecraft. It is shown that the sequence of pulses recorded by the SP-1 instruments show deviations from a random distribution. Some of the nonrandom sequences observed by SP-1 are in the same time intervals as the

Gas kinetics and dust dynamics in low-density comet comae

Icarus, 2010
Abstract Extensive regions of low-density cometary comae are characterized by important deviations from the Maxwell–Boltzmann velocity distribution, i.e. breakdown of thermodynamic equilibrium. The consequences of this on the shapes of emission and absorption lines, and for the acceleration of solid bodies due to gas drag, have rarely been ...

Coma morphology and dust emission pattern of comet Halley

Advances in Space Research, 1985
Abstract This contribution starts with a short overview on cometary dust modelling and then focuses on the application of coma modelling with respect to in-situ measurements of cometary dust and ground based observations. The fountain model, valid for the dynamics of small cometary dust particles, is discussed.

Dust in the Inner Coma of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

2021
The main goal of the work presented in this PhD thesis is to investigate the dust dynamics in the near-nucleus coma of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P) and to gain a deeper understanding of the physical processes governing it. In our analyses, we study numerical simulation results of gas and dust comae in combination with image analysis of Rosetta

Dust Spatial Distribution and Radial Profile in Halley's Inner Coma☆

Icarus, 1997
Abstract Mosaic images of the brightness distribution of solar radiation scattered by dust in Halley's coma are constructed using the spectra obtained by the three-channel spectrometer TKS during the approach phase of the Vega 2 spacecraft. They cover a sector having a radius of 40,000 km centered at the nucleus with an angular extent of 50°.

Dust Hazard Assessment using the Engineering Dust Coma Model of the Comet Interceptor mission

IntroductionThe Comet Interceptor (CI) mission [1] will pass through a potentially hazardous region of a comet’s inner coma. It is therefore important to assess the dust impact risk to the spacecraft and their scientific instruments to aid hazard mitigation strategies.

Properties of dust in the coma of Churyumov-Gerasimenko

2010
The last apparition of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko before the Rosetta spacecraft ren-dezvous in 2014 has taken place in 2008-2009. Observations have therefore been carried out to optimize the mission. In this context, observations of solar light scattered by dust, with em-phasis on polarimetric data, provide comparisons between the dust properties ...
