Bed Friction in Combined Wave-Current Flows

Coastal Engineering 2000, 2001
Experiments have been performed over a wide range of wave-current combinations in a laboratory flume and a large oscillating water tunnel. Direct measurements of the bed shear stress with a shear cell show that the oscillatory friction factor scales with a/k in the same way irrespective of whether or not a mean current is superimposed.

Velocity and turbulence affected by submerged rigid vegetation under waves, currents and combined wave–current flows

Coastal Engineering, 2020
Abstract Vegetation can change flow structure and turbulence characteristics. However, few studies have focused on combined wave–current flows in canopy with vertically varying density. Therefore, laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate hydrodynamics affected by submerged rigid vegetation with different densities (i.e.

Combined wave and current interaction with a rough bottom

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1979
An analytical theory is presented to describe the combined motion of waves and currents in the vicinity of a rough bottom and the associated boundary shear stress. Characteristic shear velocities are defined for the respective wave and current boundary layer regions by using a combined wave‐current friction factor, and turbulent closure is accomplished

Laboratory study on wave dissipation by vegetation in combined current–wave flow

Coastal Engineering, 2014
Abstract Coastal wetlands such as salt marshes and mangroves provide valuable ecosystem services including coastal protection. Many studies have assessed the influence of plant traits and wave conditions on vegetation-induced wave dissipation, whereas the effect of tidal currents is often ignored.

Initial motion of sediment under waves and wave-current combined motions

Coastal Engineering, 1995
Recently, one of the authors proposed a very convenient formula to evaluate the friction coefficient induced by wave-current combined motion, which spans all flow regimes including the transitional regime and requires no iteration. This formula is applied to an analysis of existing experimental data regarding initial motion of sediment particles under ...

Internal Wave Generation by a Combination of Tidal and Steady Currents

2021
<p>In the presence of topography, two main contributors for internal wave energy are tide-topography interaction transferring energy from the barotropic tide to internal tides, and lee wave generation when geostrophic currents or eddying abyssal flows interact with topography.

Mean bed friction of combined wave/current flow

Coastal Engineering, 1988
Abstract Bijker's model for evaluating the wave-period-mean bed friction of combined wave/current flow has been modified to account for the current velocity reduction as well as the wave boundary layer near the sea bed. A method of estimating the bed frictional dissipation rate of the combined flow is also presented.

Bed friction and dissipation in a combined current and wave motion

Ocean Engineering, 1985
Abstract Two simple two-layer eddy viscosity models, which facilitate analytical solutions, are presented in order to describe the velocity field and associated shear stress in a combined current wave motion. The models, which have the same eddy viscosity in the current boundary layer, but different eddy viscosities in the wave boundary layer, cover ...

Distribution of turbulent energy in combined wave current flow

Ocean Engineering, 2018
Abstract The present study describes the turbulent flow characteristics of the steady flow and the combined wave-current flow for two different wave periods on unidirectional current. The turbulent kinetic energy distributions for steady flow and combined wave-current flow were analyzed to examine the turbulent energy production, pressure energy ...
