Yield Genes, Heterosis and Combining Ability
The American Naturalist, 1946A WIDE collection of varieties of almost any crop plant often exhibits a wide range in variability for each quantitative character. Yield and other quantitative characters usually are the end result of the interaction of a large number of genes under particular environmental conditions.

Principles for Griffing's combining ability analysis
Genetica, 1993Griffing's diallel analysis is used in plant improvement programs to identify superior parents for crossing and for characterizing general, specific, and reciprocal effects. Eight different model/method combinations are commonly used in the analysis. The accuracy of the analysis is improved by using the appropriate model and method.

Combining ability and heterosis analysis for yield traits in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum)
Indian Journal of Agricultural Sciences, 2014In order to realize the combining ability and heterosis of wheat, 21 hybrids were synthesised in a 7 × 7 diallel fashion excluding reciprocals. Analyses of combining ability and heterosis over mid parent (MP) as well as economic parent (HD 2733) were ...

COMBINING ABILITY IN FODDER LABLAB
Madras Agricultural Journal, 1996Combining ability analysis was done in six genotypes of fodder lab lab for 12 traits viz plant height, primary branches per plant, secondary branches per plant, number of leaves, specific leaf weight, green fodder yield, dry weight of leaf, dry weight of stem, leaf:stem ratio, dry matter yield, crude protein and phosphorus content. Based on gea effects

COMBINING ABILITY IN FODDER PEARL MILLET
Madras Agricultural Journal, 1996Combining ability analysis was done in pearl millet for 12 quantitative traits including crude protein, calcium and oxalate contents. Predominance of GCA variance was observed in the traits viz, days to 50 per cent flowering, intermodal length, green fodder yield per clump, dry matter yield per clump, crude protein and oxalate contents while other six ...

COMBINING ABILITY IN BARLEY BREEDING
Madras Agricultural Journal, 1983Combining ability was studied for grain yield and its component using the F1, F and F, of a 6 x 6 diallel set in barley. Both GCA and SCA variances were significant for all the traits in each generation. The GCA effects were associated with per se performance of parents for almost all the traits, ayoti, DL 70 and PL 102 were found to be good general ...

Combining ability in early Indian cauliflower
The Journal of Agricultural Science, 1977SummarySix early maturing inbreds from maturity group I of Indian cauliflowers were selected and diallol crosses were made to study the combining ability of inbreds and identify the desirable parent(s) for hybridization. Seven characters, i.e. curd weight, curd size index, maturity, plant height, number of leaves, leaf size index and plant spread were ...

Heterosis and Combining Ability in Wheat
Madras Agricultural Journal, 1977The magnitude and nature of heterosis and combining ability in a set of diallel crosses of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. om Theil.). involving five genotypes, were studied for grain yield, 100-kernel weight, spike number and plant height. Positive overall heterosis was observed for all the characters except for 100-kernel weight.

Segregation and Combining Ability
1979We have seen in Chapter 1 that with a knowledge of the mendelian principle of units of inheritance and a chequerboard diagram it is possible to work out expected segregations. The technique can be used by the breeder to forecast the numbers of individuals of different types in a family from a deliberate cross and also, in the reverse way, by observing ...

Combining ability estimates in groundnut
Madras Agricultural Journal, 2000Accurate identification of promising parents is crucial for groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) cultivar development. Six cultivars, namely, ICGS 44, Ginar 1, ALR 2, JL 24, GG 2 and CO 2 were intermated in all possible combinations in a full diallel mating design. The 30 reciprocal F, hybrids and six parents were utilized for the study. Five traits, namely,
