Model analysis of the dust tail of comet C/2012 K5 (LINEAR)

Kinematics and Physics of Celestial Bodies, 2015
From the dynamic modeling of the process forming the dust tail of comet C/2012 K5 (LINEAR), the brightness distribution in this dust tail has been retrieved. The model developed by Korsun on the basis of the statistical Monte-Carlo approach was used. The adequacy of the model was determined by fitting the observed and modeled isophots.

Comet dust tails as a tracer for the solar wind.

The sublimation of volatiles from comets near the Sun such as water ice results in the ejection of vast quantities of dust grains from the nucleus. These ejected grains are then sorted by radiation pressure forces to form a dust tail. Visually spectacular dust tails, such as that of C/2006 P1 (McNaught), often display linear striations across the tail,

Dust Grains in the Comae and Tails of Sungrazing Comets: Modeling of Their Mineralogical and Morphological Properties

Icarus, 2002
Abstract Observations of sungrazing comets, all of which belong to the Kreutz family, provide the opportunity of studying the properties of dust in the comae and tails of the comets. On the basis of available information on cometary and interplanetary dust as well as observations of dust in the tails of sungrazers, we model dust in sungrazing comets ...

Finite lifetime fragment model for synchronic band formation in dust tails of Comets

Icarus, 1990
Abstract A finite lifetime fragment model is proposed for the formation of synchronic bands in dust tails of comets. Applying the simultaneous fragmentation model proposed by Sekanina and Farrell (1980) to three comets (Mrkos, Seki-Lines, West), we found the lifetime of the fragment to range from 25 to 70 days.

Modeling of the dust tail of comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) from the results of observations

Solar System Research, 2015
The results of the dynamic modeling of the process, that formed the dust tail of comet C/2012 S1 (ISON), are presented. The images of the comet were acquired with the 1-meter Zeiss-1000 telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS). To construct the model of the dust tail, the trajectories of 50 million

Dust tail observation and modeling of the interstellar comet 2I/Borisov

On 30 August 2019 the amateur Borisov discovered a new comet; after few days it was clear from the characteristics of its orbit (eccentricity > 3 and high hyperbolic excess velocity) that the second interstellar object had been detected and the object received the name of 2I/Borisov.

Indication for precession of comet Halley's nucleus from dust tail analysis

Earth, Moon, and Planets, 1990
The distinct structures ta comet Halley's dust tail around the beginning of March 1986 are analyzed by means of a computer simulation based on nucleus data obtained by the Giotto mission. It is shown that the assumption of a considerable free precession is required to understand the ground based dust tail observations from that time supposing a ...

Changing linear polarization properties in the dust tail of comet C/2012 S1 (ISON)

Icarus, 2020
Abstract Polarization measurements made with the STEREO/SECCHI COR1 and COR2 coronagraphs during the perihelion passage of sungrazing comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) in November 2013 are presented and compared with earlier measurements made of Kreutz sungrazing comet C/2011 W3 (Lovejoy).

A Browser Based Three Dimensional Simulator for Comet Dust Tail Modeling

Rapidly discovered comets are often known only from their orbital elements and a handful of early images, creating a need for tools that can interpret dust tail morphology quickly. This work presents a browser based, real time, three dimensional simulator of cometary dust tails.
