The Earth and Comets' Tails [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1910
IN spite of the unreserved predictions of astronomers, the earth did not pass through the tail of Halley's comet on May 18–19, nor subsequently. The tail as seen in the morning sky, previous to the transit of the comet across the sun's disc, appeared like a long and straight beam of light stretching from the horizon to Aquila.

DNA Damage Analysis in Children with Non-syndromic Developmental Delay by Comet Assay [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, 2016
Introduction: Majority of the developmental delays in children are non-syndromic and they are believed to have an underlying DNA damage, though not well substantiated.

Light-curve analysis of KOI 2700b: the second extrasolar planet with a comet-like tail [PDF]

open access: yesA&A 611, A63 (2018), 2017
The Kepler object KOI 2700b (KIC 8639908b) was discovered recently as the second exoplanet with a comet-like tail. It exhibits a distinctly asymmetric transit profile, likely indicative of the emission of dusty effluents and reminiscent of KIC 12557548b, the first exoplanet with a comet-like tail. The scientific goal of this work is to verify the ...

Sepsis and survival in critically ill calves: Risk factors and antimicrobial use

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Volume 37, Issue 1, Page 374-389, January/February 2023., 2023
Abstract Background Sepsis is a life‐threatening disease for which critically important antimicrobials (CIA) frequently are used. Diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines for sepsis and critically ill calves are largely lacking. Objectives Identify factors associated with mortality in critically ill calves and describe bacteria obtained from blood ...

Spectacular Post-Perihelion Tails of Bright Kreutz Sungrazers [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
A vast majority of bright comets between the late 2nd century and the early 18th century, moving in potentially Kreutz orbits according to Hasegawa & Nakano (2001), was first sighted between 2 and 16 days after perihelion, thanks to the spectacular tails that they were then displaying. In this paper I examine the basic properties of the post-perihelion

Probing Coronal Magnetic Fields with Sungrazing Comets: \hi\ Ly$α$ from Pickup Ions [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal , Volume 887, Number 1, 2019, 2019
Observations of sungrazing comets can be used to probe the solar corona, to study the composition of the comets, and to investigate the plasma processes that govern the interaction between the coronal plasma and cometary gas. UVCS observations of the intensities and line profiles of \hi\ Ly$\alpha$ trace the density, temperature and outflow speed of ...

MTH1 deficiency selectively increases non-cytotoxic oxidative DNA damage in lung cancer cells: more bad news than good? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Representative images of “Comets” and the corresponding intensity profiles, showing (i) ~ 5% Tail DNA damage, typical of the NSCLC cells treated with no siRNA or scramble siRNA, and analysed by regular Fpg-modified alkaline comet assay (0.8 U Fpg/gel ...

Cortactin: A universal host cytoskeletal target of Gram‐negative and Gram‐positive bacterial pathogens

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, Volume 118, Issue 6, Page 623-636, December 2022., 2022
In host‐pathogen interactions, actin‐cytoskeletal dynamics play a crucial role in successful adherence, invasion, and intracellular motility by many intruding microbes. To achieve this goal, bacterial pathogens target major host regulators, one of which is the key actin‐binding protein and class‐II actin nucleation‐promoting factor cortactin.
